During my time in Europe in the 60's and 70's, European trains were made up with general seating compartments with six seats in first class and 8 seats in 2nd class. It was a thoroughly great way to travel. Now, during our trip to France this past June, we discovered that the compartments have been replaced with an open car plan much like AMTRAK and the Long Island Railroad. C'est dommage!

When did those compartment cars go away in European trains. Are there any still left on the rails - except for the sleepers?

Apart from the Orient Express and similar very expensive trains, I'm afraid they have all gone. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" />
