Couple of questions. We are picking up at Boat in the BVI's , clearing it out and bringing it to the USVI for a week. Can we clear in still on a Saturday morning at Yacht Haven Grande. Do we have to spend the night at the marina to use this office? Also, do the passengers on the boat (at the time of clearing) all have to come into the office? We are picking up some US citizens after we clear.
is clearing in to the US a long process?
thanks for your help!

When are you doing this and do you plan to return to the BVI?

We are bringing a boat into the US for a week and returning it to the BVIs. We are thinking about clearing it out of the BVI on jost and clearing it on St john, sailing around STJ and returning to Red Hook (clearing out there 0 and back to the BVIs.

I am not sure this is possible right now. Is this your personal boat? Boats have been brought back and forth by BVI certified teams (at a hefty fee). At this point it is not possible to clear into the BVI on a private vessel - only ferry. It may change by August but who knows. I am sure others will chime in here.

Recently boats had to be brought over and owners/crews met the boat and sailed on them in USVI waters. We were quoted ~2k for this service and elected to enjoy our boat in BVI instead. As I mentioned earlier, still not possible for private vessels to clear into BVI. If your boat is in a charter fleet I suggest you discuss this with them. We hope to hop between USVI and BVI next year.

You can currently clear a boat out of the BVI however you can’t clear the boat back in unless as mentioned you use a BVI government approved crew which is a bit expensive. No one knows when that might change.

Hopefully this all changes soon. No more of a risk with a crew coming in then people coming in via plane or ferry. Might argue coming in on a private boat is less of a risk.

I've been thinking over our options as we have a trip planned end of July but we're still waiting on my son's passport. Thinking about contingencies if we don't get it in time. One of them being bringing the boat over to the USVI. With 4 of us on the trip, figure 2 of us could go to BVI to bring it over. If we can't bring it back, I wonder if we could pay for that service just the one way. Seems that would at least reduce the costs? If it was just the $2k to move it back, that's still likely cheaper then other possibilities such as just being land based on PR or St John..etc.

Did you see the announcement about the BVI opening more ports for international vaccinated guests? This could possibly be the opening for private vessels. https://bvinews.com/three-additional-seaports-reopen-for-fully-vaccinated-intl-traffic/

Yeah, I'm hoping that is a good sign.

The ports opening is for international Ferry Traffic only. All guests and crew must be vaccinated.

I am in the BVI now - our boat is based here. Jay is spot on - lots of confusion but all BVI ports are only open to ferry traffic at this stage. Next extension is most likely water taxis for fully vaccinated travelers and crew.. At this point I am hoping that we can traverse between USVI and BVI next season.
