A family member is asking me about hotels in St. Lucia, and I honestly know almost nothing about them, since we have only visited on cruises. He has suggested the Rex St. Lucian Hotel and the Bay Gardens Beach Hotel. I should mention he will be traveling as a single man. Any thoughts on these particular hotels or others that anyone would recommend?

Is this a family member that I have met?? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> We stayed several days at Fond Doux before a sailing trip. It is a cocoa, flower and fruit plantation owned and operated by a third generation (if I recall correctly) landowner/farmer. It is not on a beach, but near the Pitons, next door to Ladera. I am not enthralled with the beaches of the southern Caribbean, but I love the mountains, hot springs, green hillsides, fresh fruit and veggies... Lots to do, and there is a beach not too far away.

Sorry, he's going in September... Yeah, I know, crazy time to go to the Caribbean, and they are closed September 1 to 30...

Tell him to come to the USVI. We can always use an extra hand in the middle of hurricane season!

Carol, I would suggest staying in Rodney Bay especially if he is traveling alone; there are lots of bars and restaurants along the road similar to Simpson Bay (without the traffic). BGBR is a nice place, but I usually stay at the Bay Garden Inn or Bay Garden Hotel (I prefer the inn, smaller and quieter). They have a free shuttle (7am-10pm) to BGBR or it's just a 15 minute walk and you can use all of the facilities including beach chairs and umbrellas. I would also recommend a day trip to the Soufriere area to see the Pitons, waterfalls, hot springs and botanical gardens.
Drink all day at home, your friends worry about you; do it on vacation and they say "what a good time you're having". Save your friends needless worry, travel more!

Thanks for the reply, Sammy. I will hunt up your reports about St Lucia and send to him.

i stayed in harmony suites in rodney bay and quite enjoyed the service, location and the units. i was so excited about their affordable laundry service as well. only a couple of bucks to take care of all my belongings, cleaned and pressed just like my grandma did.
harmony suites is just off the beach on a side rode. very close to the tex mex or whatever the riding bull bar is called. this is where i saw for the first time caribbean line dancing. soooooooooo hot.... i could watch it all day and all night. very professional. antigua's line dancing/salsa pales in comparison for sure.
the suites have options of facing the water as well. they are very spacious. safety is paramount. they locked the front gate and parking lot at 11. the awake security guard lets you with a smile.
though i had booking issues they were more than happy to accommodate.
i would stay here again and from memory, i paid 88 usd on expedia, last minute in feb. (it's expedia's policy to guarantee bookings and harmony suites did so with a smile)
hope this helps.

Thanks for the note. I will have him check it out. He has not been on vacation for a couple of years, and he is not necessarily looking for the cheapest place, and I think he would prefer having at least a view of the water.

Ladera resort in St Lucia is definitely a place to stay ( for a short stay)or to have lunch. It's set high above the Drive in Volcano, the view is the Pitons right in front of you. But otherwise I'd choose the Rodney Bay Area for the restaurants. http://m.ladera.com/photo-gallery/

It does look spectacular, but since he is by himself, I probably would agree with Sunset Sammy and say that Rodney Bay would be a better fit..
