Looking for a new island and think Statia might be the answer. Would be a family trip that is hiking and diving centric.

Would appreciate any thoughts from those who have visited recently.

Thanks.

I really don't know much about Statia, but there is very little tourism there. I might suggest Saba instead. The hiking and diving are pretty comparable and there is a bit more tourist infrastructure there.

Statia is an interesting island, with little tourism. Half of the island is covered by the oil storage facility and the other is home to the only city and the younger of the two volcanoes, "The Quill". While there are sandy beaches, they don't rival those on the other, more populous, islands. I liked it. The town is quaint, the touristic sites are all well-kept and well-marked. I hiked "The Quill" and that was great; I didn't climb down into the old caldera due to time limitations, but did climb all the way to the top. There's also an interesting botanical garden to visit; I rented a moped so that I could visit all the sites in style.

Hi Zanzibar,

I would second Zanshin as Statia is an unusual but is an interesting place to go.

I visited in July, can tell you definitely not a party destination.Though the island comes alive for the annual Carnival celebration in July and early August, that is a major highlight.Other highlights would be a quaint harbor town, dormant volcano and a lush rainforest and many dive sites. You can check everything about Statia on the below website https://www.st-eustatius.com/

Also, not a culinary destination like nearby St. Barths, it has couple of restaurants.Fine dining is generally limited to hotels like the Kings Well and the Old Gin House, but don't miss the Ocean View Terrace, located in the courtyard of the Government Guest House overlooking Fort Oranje. Mostly the restaurants have a very casual vibe. Recommendations: The Smoke Alley Bar and Grill is an open-air beach bar and restaurant; the Blue Bead Bar and Restaurant in Lower Town Oranjestad is renowned for its Italian and French cuisine.

Hope this helps.
