So now JetBlue is buying Spirit. Spirit was my alternate to get me to SXM from Ft. Lauderdale in January. Holding off on making reservations to see what the fallout is.

Just got an email from CEO of Spirit. Deal won’t be complete until 2024

OK, so I understand Frontier/Spirit is definitely OFF, but that does not necessarily mean that Jet Blue/Spirit is ON. And regardless it will not be effective until after January 2023. IF you book Spirit and they cancel the flight altogether, you will get your money back. If your only other option is AA, you could buy a FULLY REFUNDABLE ticket on AA and then cancel, if the Spirit flight holds, or cancel and be-book, if the price goes down. Otherwise, if you wait until much later, the price on AA may be even higher than it is now. You would be tying up a substantial bit of money in the process, but if you really want to try the Spirit deal, that is a way to hedge your bets. And another thought, it sounds like you are booking weekend flights, because you are looking at Spirit. Weekday flights on AA may be substantially cheaper than on the weekend. If your hotel is already booked, it might still be cheaper overall to add a day or two at the beginning or end and pay for a hotel, if the weekday flights on AA are cheaper.

Thanks. I really want to leave out of Ft. Lauderdale. Believe me, if I didn’t, I would never take Spirit

They plan to begin operating as a single carrier in the first half of 2025

..if it happens. And two full years after Susie is wanting to fly. So I'm thinking Jet Blue and Spirit merger, if it happens, is totally not relevant to her trip in January.

There will be zero fallout between now and January. It will be at least a year before they start to combine anything.

Not a done deal yet. Going to wait to see how this all plays out.

This is the email I received from CEO Robin Hayes July 28, 22 :
As a valued TrueBlue member we wanted to share with you the exciting news that JetBlue has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Spirit Airlines – an important first step to creating a bigger, better JetBlue for all our stakeholders.

Over time, this combination will bring you more of the JetBlue you know and love, including:
• More of JetBlue’s award-winning onboard service, including the most legroom in coach, free high-speed wi-fi, free live TV and movies at every seat, and free brand-name snacks + drinks.
• More choices across a larger, deeper network, with a combined footprint of over 125 destinations and more than 1,700 daily flights.
• More opportunities to earn and redeem your TrueBlue points.
• More low fares for all customers, regardless of who you fly, because JetBlue is proven to lower legacy carrier fares on the routes it flies (the “JetBlue Effect”).
As you can imagine, combining two airlines takes time and we still have a lot more work to do behind the scenes. After close, the combined airline will operate under the JetBlue brand. Eventually, all Spirit aircraft will be converted to JetBlue, but for now nothing is changing – we remain two independent airlines until the transaction closes. Any tickets you’ve purchased on either JetBlue or Spirit are still valid, and all your points and benefits stay exactly the same. We will keep you posted as we have additional details to share.

In the meantime, to learn more about what this exciting combination will mean for you, visit our special website at www.LowFaresGreatService.com. We look forward to welcoming you again onboard soon!

Thank you,
Robin Hayes CEO

Bigger news would be Southwest finally adding SXM as a destination. Being from Cincinnati we have very limited options and I was hoping for the Frontier/Spirit merger to add some competition. Rarely do we get a RT for under $800.
