I was at the Bitter End Yacht Club the first week of August with my girlfriend and wanted to give a quick trip report.
Getting There:
When we got there, a taxi that took us the ½ mile to a ferry met us at the airport. It was a lot less hassle than I believed it would be.
The Rooms:
We stayed in the beach-front villa for one night. It was hot during the day but cooled down late in the evening. My only complaint was that the shutters don’t close all the way in the rooms. Ordinarily, this is not a problem, unless you want to get dressed in the room. We then spent several nights on a Freedom 30. Although it certainly isn’t a quick boat by any means, it was pretty reliable for us and very easy to sail and that’s all I need. We then spent a few nights in the North Sound Suites (the air-conditioned ones). These were not quite as charming as the villas were, but they were much more private. They were quite a trek up a very steep hill, but you can get a golf cart taxi most of the time. Yes, the AC was very, very nice.
The Food:
The food was pretty decent. You must (MUST!) get the all-inclusive package unless you know for sure you are eating a lot of meals away from the hotel. Dinner came to $100 every night for us and we were very glad we got everything included. We ate dinner one night at Saba Rock and the price was pretty much the same. When we go back, we will probably go over to Biras instead of Saba.
The Trips:
We went on the Norman Island and Anegada trips. Both were great. However, remember to bring a book or something to read on the way there.
The Staff:
Great. Enough said. However, some people made it over to Tortola and reported that not everyone is as nice as the people on Virgin Gorda.
The Other Guests:
Because we went in the off-season, there were not many others around. As a result, we got to know some of the other couples/families there and they were all pretty great.
The Bottom Line:
It was a great experience. We’d recommend it to anyone looking for a pretty active vacation. We’ll be back. By the way, try the banana daiquiris and get a few bottles of Mount Gay Rum instead of the Cruzan.
