Good evening everyone! We are flying through PR to Tortola with an American/Silver code share next Saturday. I was on the Silver website a few days ago and noticed that they now have a one checked bag (per passenger) policy. Our issue is that we come down for two weeks, and we have a lot of gluten free items for my wife and daughters. I also like bringing things like our Mantus dinghy anchor - worth the money and travel headache (IMO) since we never have to drag our dinghy up the beach!

We typically check 4 bags for 4 people and then gate check our carry-ons here in Raleigh. In the past, all of the bags have just transferred to Silver and we don't touch a bag until Tortola. However, now I feel like we need to make sure the carry-ons get on our first two flights so we aren't over the 1 checked bag limit. I've tried to email Silver - they don't have a customer service number - but they aren't replying. Do any of you have a recent experience with this?

If American accepts the bags in RDU I think you’re set. Silvers rules would apply to flights booked direct on them. All the dinghies I have used have a anchor stored in the bow that works fine.

Unless rules have changed very recently, we check 4 bags for two of us. In fact, business tickets on American permit 70lb. bags. I would never check a carry-on because that's where I pack the stuff to get by if the checked bags get delayed.

As I recall the supermarkets have a decent selection of gluten-free products, often from the UK. You might call Riteway and One Mart to verify.

Thank you both for replying! It's a tough call since we do have some fear related to lost bags with Silver. Regarding the dinghy anchor, the "claw" hasn't been very effective for us over the years. With the Mantus (4.5 pounds in a bag for travel), I can throw it and the dinghy truly sticks - even in higher winds. It's great because we typically throw it and the back swings right up to the shallow water, then we step on and off. The guy that owns the Moorings boat we book turned me on to it (thank you David!) and I've always wondered why more regulars haven't bought these. Maybe others like the workout of dragging the dinghy. Maybe me and David are just too into our gear and we are weird. Maybe... We are leaving next Saturday and we are quite excited to get back down! The new Silver planes accommodate carry-ons in the overhead.

We did a code share with Jet Blue and Silver in May.
Multiple checked bags for a couple of the crew without a problem and plenty of room in Silver under seat and overhead.

However, the boarding passes issued by one airline for the other did not work either way.
We sure to have the airline check/reissue your connecting flight boarding passes in SJU.

FYI: Jet Blue credit card free checked bag policy does not apply when connecting to a non-Jet Blue airline.

Be sure to pack your necessities in a carry on. Several in our group in April lost their checked bags on an AA-Silver code share from LAX and DEN to EIS. Several of the bags arrived 2 days later and the last bag finally arrived 5 days late. AA washed their hands of it saying they handed the bags off to Silver even though it was really the AA flight delays that probably led to the problem in the first place. My idiot sister in law unbelievably had packed her meds in her checked bag. It took us several days to find a chemist to set her right. Needless to say, our sailing itinerary was......hmmm, not what we had planned.
