I'm currently sailing from SXM to the Azores and we are about 200NM to the northeast of the island. There is a lot of sargassum out here, more than I've ever seen. And it is headed your way
It's everywhere, it's everywhere! Just got back from Bermuda. Saw more of it on the south shore beaches there than I have ever seen before at this time of year.
Early this morning the sea weed was pushed up against the cliffs of Beacon Hill. Then the wind direction must have changed and pushed it all up against the beach. Take a look and SXM Island Cam before the sunsets. It's bad!!!
I find it hard to believe they could keep up with it the way it was floating by and the volume. Going to give Mullet a go tomorrow. Chair reservations all set.
Yikes! Sorry to hear this. We're leaving Saturday for 2 weeks in Orient Village. Last year the beach was littered with sargassum but all you can do is make the best of it. We enjoyed Friar's Bay and plan to go there several days of our vacation but it's so easy just to walk down to orient beach. How's the breezes? We enjoy it most when there's a nice breeze coming in from the ocean. Are the sand flies bad as well?
We visited Orient last week. Sand flies were prevalent on the northern part of the beach, where the seaweed was. No sand flies on the Club O section, and minimal seaweed. Nice breezes!
From KKO to Bikini beach the tractor rakes the sargassum nicely!!! We stay at LaPlaya, it's always beautiful and the sand is like powdered sugar!! Never had problems with sand flies!!! Could be the brand of sunscreen??? BTW!!! BEST SUSHI on the island IMHO!!!
In my experience it is really unusual for Orange Fever to not clean up "its" section of the beach. Did you get the impression that the influx of sargassum was simply too much to keep up with?
It’s on Simpson Bay Beach as well. I believe it’s Heather who post for D’s Beach bar. She thanked the Beacon Hill Association for the cleaning up. The statement added on their Instagram Story said that they would be closed until there’s a safe environment for their guests.. The amount of seaweed is massive. Never seen it in person or filmed this thick and wide spread.
There’s a back hoe putting it into big piles. I’ve never seen it that thick and from the video angle if you’re standing in front of D’s looking at the beach, you can see it going down in front of Beachside villas..

Its a big Job and expensive. I am surprised that the Beacon Hill owners would pay to clean up the beach for private beach restaurant. Nice but that can't be cheap, its huge mess and they seaweed always seems to be pushed into that corner. Center I Simpson Bay normally better and a better breeze. Time will tell.
I can see why the association would want it cleaned up and willing to pay for it. The smell from decomposition with toxic fumes couldn't be welcomed. Might be a private beach bar but the beach is public.
Scuba--yes, the beach is public and used by many private houses and rentals in that area, as many people come down to the beach via that stairway at the end of the beach. I hope it lets up soon.
I'm now 700 NM to the northeast of SXM, sailing on towards the Azores. There are still some very small patches of Sargassum out here, but nothing like the dense mats seen closer to the Caribbean. So far, all we could catch with the fishing rod was Sargassum, but the catch was too small so it was released again
