Hello all, we used to go to SXM every years for 2-3 weeks, we had timeshares but gave them up. We visited from 2000-2014 but hubby had to retire due to illness and travel became untenable. I was so very sorry when Irma devastated the island and am wondering how SXM has recovered over the past few years? I know Club Orient has not been rebuilt, and that Busby's/Daniel's By The Sea and Captain Oliver's were wiped out. What other institutions didn't make it? How has the island changed in general?
That's a hard question to answer, how the island has changed. It is definitely more built up and I personally do not care at ALL for the high rises in Cupecoy. There are more cars. But I think the essence of the island is the same, if you ignore the 'noise'. I still can't imagine anywhere else on earth I'd rather be.
Yes, we have such fond memories of our vacations there. I miss it. I know my husband won't make it there again, and I can't imagine ever going back without him.
Our lil island, she took a BAD punch to the gut!! But she's tough as nails!! As we lost some of our favorite beach restaurants and bars, others rebuilt!!! Maho is completely brand new with great new restaurants!!! Mr. Chow /Roma on my top list!! Orient has so many great beach restaurants and the village came back better than ever!! Our two favorites are LaPlaya for the best sushi on the island and for IMHO the best caribbean food on the beach is Chez Leandra!! Watch out for the "Royal rum punch" LOL!!! You'll need a car to get around, my best recommendation is SAX for the best service and rates on the island!! https://www.saxcarrental.com/
Oh wow, that food looks delicious. I remember that good food was all over the island, to get a bad meal was rare. Did Sunset Beach Bar rebuild? How is Mullet Bay now? What about Dino’s restaurants?
Sunset rebuilt, yes, but it is a total tourist trap. Many people here go to Driftwood, at the other end of the beach. Rosie's is still there on Mullet, along with another restaurant, that actually has a real bathroom. There is another really high end beach bar there now, down toward Cupecoy. Unfortunately Dino no longer has a restaurant on SXM. I am not certain, but I think he is doing private chef jobs now.
Yes, SBB was always a tourist trap lol, but a good location to watch planes land and take off. Glad Mullet was built back and improved, it was my favorite beach when the water was calm.
I have to say that SSBB is busy and crowded, especially on days with mega cruise ships, but I have to say that their food is very good, much better than in the past. We go there for lunch and to watch the planes at least once or twice every year, most especially if we happen to have guests
