Looking for some insight from the Simpson Bay regulars. When we visited last Fall we stayed on the Dutch side in Pelican key area. It is not our usual location and we ran into horrific traffic in the mid afternoons to early evenings between mullet/causeway through Simpson Bay, and ultimately to the turnoff to Pelican Key. Maybe an hour or so to get through that short stretch. We were told at the time there that this was the daily normal. Is it? (We may alter our future plans if so.). Thanks!

I think it depends on your time of year and it there are traffic accidents. We stay in that area and never really encountered any traffic backups in our 4 week stay May/June and we drove all times of the day.

ok, well that sounds a bit more encouraging, thanks. We were there around Thanksgiving. It seemed weird because it was consistent and not a matter of the usual suspects (accident, flooding, road work, bridge open, etc.). Thanks again

We're there at that same time of year, and often encounter heavy traffic from around 4-7 PM. If there's an accident even on the hill into Philipsburg, traffic will quickly back up past the airport. One day I got out of the car across from Dinghy Dock, walked to Market Garden, shopped, and walked back to the car. My husband had moved perhaps three or four car lentghs in that time. We did learn there was an accident that day.

As GaKaye said, the traffic can be very heavy and we try to avoid that area between 4-6 pm when we are there in mid-November.

OK thanks. That's along the lines of what we were seeing.

We spend time there in November - December as well as some time in January-February. The time frame mentioned of 4 pm to 7 pm is correct. Most days traffic is heavy at that time. However it's not always backed up. If we are planing to head out for dinner we check on a couple of the live Web cameras to see if things are contested. The Island Camera that shows the causeway round about will tell you if things are moving or not. It can change quickly. We stay on Simpson Bay Beach so if traffic is too bad we'll just walk to one of the many great restaurants nearby.
