We have a group of 8 of us leaving from Dubrovnik and ending in Split 7 days later. If anyone has any tips… we have only ever chartered in the BVI before. We have a captain and hostess but as far as provisioning, must-see swimming coves , etc we welcome all info. We are in our 50s and 60s and not into the night life party scene like Hvar town . Rather- great swimming holes especially off the beaten path. Restaurants etc. wineries. …. Any help would be appreciated. We leave late Sept.

I don't have many recommended places but, be aware, we were there mid/late September two years ago and the cost of marinas/town docks was very high in the Split area. Over 300 Euro a night for a 45ft cat. It was also very busy as September is peak time for those without school-age kids. The one location we do remember particularly enjoying was the island of Vis, just south of Hvar. Get there early and contact the harbour master and they'll bring you in when/if they have space. If you don't make it onto the dock, it was fine to anchor just outside, weather permitting.

Thank you!!! Vis sounds great. We end in split so I think that’s on the charter company. We hopefully can stay away from the super pricey marinas but it always is more than you think. Thanks for taking the time to write!!!

It's been a while, but when we chartered in Croatia (with a captain, but no hostess; round trip out of Split), we didn't provision much at all. Some breakfast stuff and snacks, and maybe ingredients for one dinner. It was a lot like being in France and Italy -- when we didn't go out for meals, we just picked up what looked good in the local shops and markets on a daily basis. Each little town had something to offer. We were happy with local cheeses, bread, produce and meats (e.g. "prsjut" which is strangely like proscuitto).

Get your crew to point you to the local "konoba" - which is like a tavern. Many have a specialty called "peka," which is octopus or lamb cooked in an open hearth under a metal bell. Or a local seafood restaurant where you get to choose the fish to be grilled. One memorable evening, we drove way up into the hills and dined at a long rustic wood table under a canopy of fig and olive trees, enjoying small plates of fresh vegetables, lamb, etc., with an assortment of liqueurs and cheeses to finish off the experience.

Thank you for your response. I’ve watched YouTube videos on peka and I’m sure it’s a must do. Might you remember that island you had that special dinner ? That sounds right up our alley!!!

Here's some of what I have from my notes:

- The place where we chose our whole fish was on Solta, on a bay called Sesula, with the restaurant named Konoba Sesula
- The beautiful dinner under the trees was on the island of Brac, in a village called Dracevica
- Another place for peka was outside of Stari Grad (Hvar), where we had dinner up in the mountains; the restaurant was named Konoba Vrisnik

It's been a few years, as I've said. You can find my blog posts here:
