I apologize for the length of this report.

This trip was a five-year anniversary vacation. We were married at Sapphire Beach 5 years ago and wanted to go back but didn’t really want to go back to St. Thomas. We chose the BVI because we would be able to make a stop in St. Thomas to make a sentimental trip to Sapphire Beach and do a little shopping as well as escape to a quieter place.

Day 1, Minneapolis to JVD
Taxi arrived promptly at 5:00 AM and took us to the airport. It was 26° when we left the house. We bought our tickets last Dec. and got pretty good prices with connections in Chicago and Puerto Rico. Despite a couple late departures, weight restrictions etc… we made it to STT near on time. Our checked bag made the connections and was second out on the carousel. One highlight from the flight was the brown dog running next the runway in Puerto Rico. American Eagle was generously offering $100 vouchers for hotel and taxi service due to a weight restriction. (I hope you realize I’m being sarcastic.)

Some of you may remember I had some questions about how much time it would take to get from the airport to Red Hook and expressed some concern because our water taxi didn’t want to cross after dark. We used East End Taxi and prepaid a roundtrip to Red Hook and back to the airport. Our taxi driver took us through some residential areas and up to the upper road because it was rush hour and Carnival as well as the cruise ship people trying to get back to the boats, which made traffic pretty crazy. It took us about 45 minutes to get to Red Hook. (We were very glad we arranged the cab through East End even though it cost more since we didn’t have a lot of spare time to drop others off and the cab driver really seemed to try to find the quickest way for us. Round trip price was $60.00 + tip)

Our water taxi was waiting for us but it wasn’t the one we had arranged so we were concerned that we were going to have two waiting on us and wondered if we would have to pay them both. We put our bags in the East End Taxi office and went across the street to the Marina Market and purchase a few items (bread, deli meat, cheese, beverages, etc…). When we got back to the taxi stand, we straightened out the confusion. He explained the other water taxi’s boat was broke down and had asked him to pick us up. We were very relieved to find out we didn’t have two water taxi’s waiting on us. We had another passenger and headed out. As we crossed the water, we watched the hazy horizon and sun set and tried to figure out which islands we were going past. We made an unexpected stop at Tortola’s West End to drop off the other passenger and then were off to Little Harbour on Jost. Steve was surprised I could identify the islands since we hadn’t ever been to the BVI. We arrived on Jost at 7 PM and White Bay Villas at about 7:30. We knew we were going to have a wonderful surprise the next morning once we awoke in our new place. Steve showed us the flat dingy we were supposed to rent during our stay, which never worked out because someone had cut them. We were very tired from our travels so we made sandwiches and unpacked, showered, opened the doors and windows and got in bed under the mosquito net.

Day 2, Thursday-Jost Van Dyke
We made breakfast and enjoyed the wonderful view right from our balcony. The weather report on the radio explained that the Sahara dust caused the haze and also parts of the US were covered by Mongolian dust. They said it should clear out in the next day or so. We went down to customs and paid $15.00 and then to immigration where we paid $0.20. Paradise Jeep Rentals gave us a 4 door to use for the day until our 2 door was returned and we would have to return around 5:00 to exchange the vehicles. We made lunch, and went White Bay with a stop at Ivan’s Stress Free for a couple Caribs and then to snorkel. We snorkeled for about 3 hrs and watched several boats come and go, but we had the beach to ourselves. We went back to the villa to clean up for dinner. RJ went to exchange jeeps while I finished getting ready and then chase baby goats around our property. Our first dinner was at Abe’s in Little Harbour. We forgot our map but knew it was in Little Harbour. RJ decided that the place up ahead wasn’t it so he turned around next to a house. All of the sudden I heard a pop and a hiss and looked out the window to see the right rear tire going flat. When we got out to look at it we realized RJ had run over a piece of rebar sticking up about 4 inches out of the ground with a little orange flag on it and there was a huge hole in the sidewall of the tire and the spare tire wasn’t on the holder in back. We walked down to what turned out to be Abe’s and the ladies told us we couldn’t park were we were and to bring the car down. We explained what had happed so they go on the radio and called Paradise Jeep who said they didn’t know when they would get there. After a few drinks, 45 minutes, a $1000 bill for parking next to a ladies house (joking), help arrived. RJ went to help change the tire and the guy who changed the tire laughed and said that the next time RJ turned in someplace he should have his lady get out and make sure it’s ok. I chatted with a man from Trinidad and played with a little girl (Venitia?) who was probably around 18 mths. Our huge lobsters were served with rice, slaw and butter. The butter tasted like it had vinegar in it but the lobster was good, but not like Maine lobster. We signed the guest book and looked through it. After dinner we headed back to the villa in a downpour.

Day 3, Friday-Dual Bliss
We got up at 4:45 so we could watch the sun rinse but the sky was overcast so we went back to bed until around 6:00. The 7:00 ferry arrived on time and we arrived at West End at 7:45 and got a taxi to Road Town. We saw several places we had been reading about the last few weeks including Prospect Reef. Just before Prospect Reef I noticed what looked like heavy equipment dredging sand out of the water. We thought it was for construction but as we drove on went past Prospect Reef and realized this is probably where they were planning to put the dolphins. We found Dual Bliss then went over to the Chase Bank to withdrawal some more cash. It took several attempts before we realize our daily cash withdrawal limit is not theirs and had to withdraw the money in increments of $200.00. We were still pretty early so we had breakfast and had a wonderful waitress who got RJ a Napoleon for his cough. After breakfast we found Bill waiting for us and he told us we were going to be the only ones on this trip. Bill was a perfect host and pointed out a couple sea turtles and the different islands as we headed to the caves. When we arrived there were no moorings so we had to wait for someone to leave. While we were waiting a boat from BEYC came and took the next opening so we had to wait a bit longer. It was entertaining just to watch the boats and the people. After about 30 minutes another boat left and we were able to moor on the far end. We got in the water and snorkeled while Bill made our lunch. We saw several fish and one small jellyfish about the size of a tennis ball. We got back to the boat, rinsed off with fresh water and went up front where Bill served our lunch. Lunch was very tasty and he kept the rum punch coming. After lunch we went to Water Point and snorkeled without seeing any other people or boats in the immediate area. We saw several different fish and a ray and really enjoyed snorkeling through the crevices in the rocks. We got back to the boat, rinsed off, got more rum punch and were on our way. On the way back we stayed in back with Bill and chatted about the islands, cruise ships etc… The entire time Bill kept pouring rum punch and even had to make some more. We arrived back at the Marina about 4:30 and headed to Click Online, the cyber café to send some email to friends and post a hello message to the TT BB. The cyber café has 4 computers a jug of water and coffee and is $5.00 for 15 minutes. After all the punch, it took a lot of retyping, backspacing and deleting to fix our messages. When we were finished with that we headed out to find a taxi to take us to WE. While we were on our way we noticed the full Caffey’s beer cans and the empty Caffey’s beer cans next to the driver’s seat and giggled. We weren’t sure it was beer until we read the 4.8% alcohol printing on the cans. Who knows when he drank them? It’s the kind of thing I don’t think you’d ever see in the states. We arrived at WE around 5:30 for our 6PM ferry.

Day 4, Saturday-JVD
We found out that the 2BR villa was empty so we went over to explore and realized that the power had gone out and decided we would go to the Sandcastle for breakfast. We arrived around 7:15 and learned that breakfast wasn’t until 9:00 so we drove around JVD’s white-knuckle roads in the rain. We saw lots of goats and baby goats. Sandcastle and had the best banana pancakes. We strolled around the beach through more rain, went to the villa to read and then to Great Harbour and did a little shopping at the Fox Hole and the other little shops and then returned to the villa to hang out and read and watched our view. We made spaghetti for lunch (thanks to Orange_Burst for the frozen spaghetti idea) and the power came back as we finished cleaning. After lunch we headed to the Bubbly Pool. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the sandy area located at the east end of the island. We parked and found the path. We must have been lucky because I hear that it’s usually hard to find. Maybe we found it because we hadn’t had too many painkillers yet? It took about 15 min. to make the easy hike. We made several little stops to look at the cactus, lizards, hermit crabs, etc. You know you are about there when you hear it. It was overcast while we were there and the water crashing through is colder than the water in the harbors and bays so we didn’t stay in very long. The wind made it a bit on cool side as we sat on the warm rocks and watched. This would be a great place for a picnic lunch on a sunny day. After our trip to the bubbly pool we went back to Ivan’s and then to snorkel. We returned to the villa and showered and made dinner in again. We took some pictures of the prettiest sunset of our trip. After dinner we watched the stars and walked around outside with a flashlight until we found a tarantula which in tarantula terms wasn’t very big, but seemed huge at the time. Then in the light of the flashlight we saw a huge cockroach so we went inside in a hurry. I understand those huge flying cockroaches are common in the Caribbean, but I don’t have to like them. Ick!

Day 5, Sunday-White Bay, Soggy Dollar and Foxy’s
We woke up around 5:45 and noticed rain coming our way so we closed a few shutters and watched the rain from bed. We saw a nice full rainbow that ended right on top of someone’s boat. If you were White Bay early that morning, let me know, maybe it’s your boat (or treasure ship?) that was under the rainbow. RJ went to Great Harbour to and brought home a cookie and a wonderful brownie from Christine’s bakery. We gathered our stuff and spend the day at White Bay. We went to the east end and spread out our stuff and went snorkeling. We had a little silver and yellow fish join us and stay with us for a long time. I think we were it’s shelter. It would swim right in front of our masks. We went back to our stuff to get the underwater camera to take a picture of the fish when it started to rain very hard. RJ grabbed all the stuff and went under the sea grapes and I stayed in the water with my mask and snorkel. The water was much warmer than the air and rain. It rained hard for about 5 min. and then RJ joined me back in the water and took some pictures of our little fish.

After snorkeling we went to the Soggy Dollar for lunch and painkillers. The Soggy Dollar was pretty busy and there were several boats in the bay. There was a guy passing our free temporary tattoos. Everyone was putting them on. After about 30 minutes we were able to place our order – flying fish sandwich and conch fritters and of course painkillers. We sat at the bar and watch K.C. make painkillers and take orders. We got our lunch about 30 minutes after placing the order and it was very good. After eating and having a few more painkillers we walked further down the beach to shop and look around and then back to the east end to do a little more snorkeling before heading to the villa. We showered and took naps and just hung around the villa until dinnertime. RJ had found a large hermit crab. We put it on the floor and waited quite a while before it decided to come out a make a run for freedom. We also noticed we had a small lizard on a ziploc bag. As we headed down the hill to Great Harbour we saw a bat fly in front us and then saw a fairly large crab making it’s way across the road and up the hill. We had a very good dinner and service at Foxy’s. While dining a heavy and windy downpour came through and lasted probably longer than 10 min. We enjoyed watching the people and looking at all the stuff attached to the ceiling and walls. We looked at several business cards, student id’s, license plates (including Atkins from Indiana). Everyone enjoyed watching a couple local guys we dancing near the bar. The large black lab and a couple cats made their way table to table successfully begging for food.

After dinner we returned to the villa and found that the rain had come in the windows along with another huge cockroach. RJ chased it out. (My hero) Our little lizard was still hanging out on the ziploc bag.

Day 6, Monday-Daytrip to Anegada
We got up around 5:00 and got our stuff together and drove to Little Harbour to meet our water taxi. We arrived at West End and met our prearranged taxi to Beef Island. The first part of the drive went fairly quick, but it slowed after we past Road Town with the morning traffic. We arrived at Beef Island at 6:45 and waited at the counter for someone from Clair Aero to show up. (We were told we needed to be at the airport 1 hour prior to departure.) A lady from Clair Aero finally arrived around 7:30. Two local guys came up to the counter and got in front of us even though we were 1st to arrive. After just a few minutes our plane (Cessna 402, holds 8 +1 in the copilot seat) pulled up and we quickly loaded and took off. The flight took no more than 8 minutes to get to Anegada. We landed before 8:00 AM and checked in for our 5:20 PM return flight to Beef Island. A group of local women were sitting in the airport and were very excited to see a man from the electric company had arrived. The power was out and had been out off and on for a while. They said something was wrong with the generator. We rented a car from a woman, Lauren, in the parking lot. It seemed very odd at the time. Lauren’s little girl, Keisha, dressed in her school uniform kept hitting RJ in the back and saying it was me hitting him. The she stepped on his toes and ground her foot into his and repeatedly asked “does that hurt? Does it hurt?” Lauren gave RJ a BVI driver’s license (which we wondered why he didn’t have one on Jost) and explained we would need to return the Suzuki with a full tank of gas or we would have to pay $10. We took off in our rented silver Suzuki and headed out on the roads without a clue where we were going for a while. We made our way to the Settlement where we saw only a couple people, but it was still early and very overcast with intermittent rain. After leaving the Settlement we drove to Neptune’s Treasure and ate breakfast and hung out for a while watching a couple boats come a go. After breakfast we went driving around again and drove over steel sheets with holes in the road to some cottages near West End Point(?). They are very cute yellow places with (I think) green roofs. It looked like some were still being constructed while others were occupied. We headed back out around and found Cow Wreck Bay, made reservations for lunch and then headed to the Flamingo Pond. We hiked in and saw the flamingoes that looked like they were on the other side of the pond, near Neptune’s Treasure. We continued driving around and saw cattle with horns roaming free that didn’t act like they liked me. We stopped at Pat’s Pottery and bought a few things and chatted with Pat about the power outage and such. We went back to the pond near Neptune’s Treasure and hiked in to see if the flamingoes we closer to that side of the pond, but they looked like they were on the other side so we headed back to cow wreck to spend the rest of the morning and have lunch. We met Lauren again with a littler girl and she said lunch would be ready later and then left with the little girl. We ate our very yummy lobster salad sandwiches and watched it rain for 15-20 minutes. Lauren told us to go to Flash of Beauty for the best snorkeling before left. Off to Flash of Beauty we went with a stop at another entrance to the Flamingo Pond. After walking in to see the flamingoes again we realized that the pond must be much larger than we realized and they must be hanging out in the very center. (We saw George’s cute place from the road to Flash of Beauty and again from the beach.) We arrived at Flash of Beauty and had very good Painkillers and hung out in their chairs under the shades. There was lots of rain in the distance and the surf was really crashing into the reef. When we arrived there was only one guy as far as the eye could see. By the time we got our snorkel gear and got in the water several others had arrived. We tried to snorkel, but the current was running parallel along the beach and it took a lot of work just to stay in one spot and not to be swept into the coral. We went out a ways but didn’t stay long and ended up staying near the beach and allowing ourselves to be pushed along while looking at shells and trying to stay clear of the coral. We came across a live lobster trap with several HUGE lobsters. I’ve never seen such big live lobsters. We hovered around the trap and looked at them and took a couple pictures with the underwater camera. Hope the pictures come out ok. We got out of the water and started to walk along the beach and were going to walk out to what looked like a point in the distance, but rain was coming so we strolled along not venturing far from shelter. We ended up getting caught in heavy, windy downpour and ran to the shelter of the bar where we dried off, had another drink and decided we should go back to the airport. We arrived and left the keys and $10 cash in the ashtray for gas because we weren’t able to fill up since the power was out. We waited at the airport a long time before the lady for Clair Aero showed up. Our experience with Clair Air didn’t leave us with a positive feeling and if we ever return to Anegada we will probably try to explore other options before using them. Everything worked out, but it was very frustrating not being told the process and not being able to get answers while we waited for our return flight. (Please let me know if you plan to fly on Clair Aero for the 1st time so I can explain what you need to know.) We made a quick stop to get something to help our itchy bug bites. There weren’t any choices, just Lanacane for $6. I was so sure we wouldn’t need anything for itch when I packed that I didn’t pack any anti-itch medicine. We arrived at West End around 6:40 PM and our water taxi was to arrive at 6:45. Steve arrived about 5 minutes late and we were crossed to Little Harbour and met Steve’s wife, and chatted about the big piece of equipment from the US Army sitting in Little Harbour. It turns out that it’s a desalinization plant that the BVI is/was leasing from the US but it has to be returned to the USVI. We had dinner at Harris’ and had a wonderful time. Cynthia, our waitress was very sweet and funny and we enjoyed listening to Rueben Chinnery play guitar and sing. RJ had grouper and I had lobster salad. Dinner was served with a wonderful fish soup and rolls. We also shared a piece of wonderful pineapple pie for desert. After dinner and a few drinks we returned to our villa after a long day and didn’t find any new creepy-crawlies inside.

Day 7, Tuesday-Another Day on Jost
We woke up to another rain shower and watched a ship come to White Bay that was supposed to be there the day before. We went to Sandcastle and had more excellent banana pancakes. After eating we stopped by the big house to find the property managers were around and let them know we were leaving on Wed. to spend one night on St. Thomas before heading home and to see if we could tour the place. The power went out after the rain and so we went with the property manager to switch the house to battery power and to crank-start the old generator for maintenance. He also showed us the Mangos, papaya, key lime and bananas. The power came back on after a couple hours and we went to Foxy’s for lunch and had a great lunch and enjoyed Foxy’s stories and songs. After lunch we went back to White Bay to spend some time on the beach and snorkeled. We were able to go out further over the reef and saw lots of fish. After a while we snorkeled over the sand and dove for shells and found a huge sand dollar. We got out, applied the bug spray and walked to the other side of the beach to Jewell’s. We chatted with her for a while and then the bugs came so we headed back to our villa.

Day 8, Wednesday-Jost to St. Thomas
We left our wonderful little villa around 11:00 AM went to customs. While I was in line for customs RJ returned the jeep and they didn’t charge us for the tire. Our water taxi arrived and we left right around noon. As we crossed the water back to the US, we sadly watched JVD and the rest of the BVI shrink in the distance. We made a quick stop in St. John at US Customs and at Red Hook just before 1:00 and unloaded. Steve directed us to Molly Malone’s for a quick burger for lunch. We enjoyed our lunch. The food was good. We watched the waitress feed lettuce to four iguana that ran out from the bushes as soon as she tossed the lettuce on the ground. After lunch we walked to the East End Taxi stand and rode with another couple that was just returning from 5 days of bare boating in the BVI. They also had allowed one day in STT to begin getting reacquainted with real life. We arrived at the Mafolie around 1:30 and left our bags in the office because our room wasn’t ready. We walked the very steep decent down the hill to Main Street to do some shopping. It took about 20 minutes and our legs were tired. We only shopped a couple hours and then decided to walk up the 99 steps be had to go up about 99 steps before we got to them. After making it all the way up we decided to go back down and get a cab back to the Mafolie. We checked in and went to our room and checked out the view. Our room was small but had a wonderful view, a refrigerator, TV, window a/c and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom has lots of space to hang clothes and a small safe. The shower is very small. We liked our room but noticed the light coming in around the windows and the exterior needs some TLC (scrape and paint and repairs). Our carpet and bedding looked brand new and the paint in the room looked fairly recent. We enjoyed the view of the Charlotte Amalie and the Cruise ships with our new binoculars. We also enjoyed the roosters but were glad we had a/c and glad we didn’t hear any on JVD. When arrived there were 3 ships; Disney Magic, Sun Princess and Seabourne Goddess 1 (the ship that was in White Bay the day before). We watched the people gather for carnival and listened to the music from our perch above town. We cleaned up and walked up to Sibs on the Mountain for dinner just up the hill and around the corner from the Mafolie. It was a good, moderately priced casual dinner. The portions were huge and could have shared. The seafood primavera was loaded with seafood. There was a cat walking around begging for food and petting. After I petting it, it took a swat at my hand and caught my finger with a claw. Some thanks I got. We were going to walk back down the hill but just as we were leaving a cab dropped off some people so we caught a ride. When we got back we watched all the people at Carnival and noticed Seabourne Goddess 1 and Sun Princess had left. We could see Sun Princess’ lights off in the distance with the binoculars.

Day 9, Thursday-Return to Minneapolis
The Mafolie was supposed to have breakfast for us starting at 8:00 but the maids hadn’t arrived due to Carnival traffic by 8:25 when our taxi arrived. We spent some time walking around the property and checking out the view. We went to Sapphire Beach for a sentimental visit, got caught in rain while we were walking. They have updated the point where we were married and have added red roofs to the buildings, but we still thought the property wasn’t as nice as it was 5 years ago. We stood at the end of the point and looked at Jost, Tortola and St. John and wished we were still on Jost. It was nice to go back to where we were married 5 years before. We went to the Seagrape and had the breakfast buffet but had very slow service. It wasn’t busy but it took 15-20 minutes to get glasses of water. We watched the pouring rain so we sat and watched it for a while and when it let up a little we made a dash to the lobby to get a cab back downtown to do a little more shopping. It was about 11:15 and we were running late for our noon checkout. We still wanted to shower and finish packing. Due to the heavy Carnival traffic we had to walk several blocks to get around the traffic jam and find a taxi to take us up the hill. We showered and finished the packing and were out of there by a few minutes before 12. Since our flight wasn’t until 3:17 we asked our cab driver to make a stop at Top of the Mountain so we could take a couple pictures and see Jost one last time. We had intended to get lunch but the traffic was so bad we decided to go to the airport early. We arrived at the airport just as it was starting to rain and checked in and requested better seats. The American Airlines Agent was very nice, but not quite with it. Maybe she’d been up all night with Carnival? She put a DFW tag on one our bags when we were really going to MSP via Puerto Rico and O’Hare. RJ noticed this after we were waved through customs and were starting to put our bags on the belt. Luckily the wrong tag was only on our smaller bag so we took off the tag and carried it on. We watched several planes come and go and had a not so tasty lunch at the airport. We watched the authorities go through a ladies bag right at the American gate and eventually left with the bag. We boarded our flight on time, arrived early in Puerto Rico. I made my first calls to check messages at work and talk to a co-worker. We boarded the plane and found out that you shouldn’t sit in row 11 of a 757 because row 9 doesn’t have an overhead bin so rows 9 and 10 use 11’s and so on. We had to put our bag a couple rows behind us, which is very annoying when you want to get off the plane quickly. We left Puerto Rico on time. As we got closer and closer to home the pit in my stomach got worse and worse thinking about returning to work and leaving our wonderful and relaxing vacation. We arrived at O’Hare checked in and waited to board. Our plane was there, but we had to wait and wait to board and we left late. We arrived in Minneapolis close to on time (around 11:30 PM), got our bags, found a cab and was home by 12:00. When we got home our neighbor who watched our dog was letting her out one last time for the night. It was good to see the dog right away when we got home. We stayed up and went through the mail and looked at our digital pictures on TV until the battery went dead and finally went to bed around 1:00. It was nice to be home in our own bed, but I was really dreading the return to real life.

I got up early and went to work to find I had 213 emails to sort through and then my boss told me to schedule my annual review on Monday. Some we wore more than once and others we never wore at all. We took 2 beach towels, Tevas, light hiking shoes, and a pair of nicer sandals. We only brought 1 pr. of socks each and ended up washing them. We didn’t bring pants or jackets and didn’t feel a real need but maybe during some of the evening windy rain showers. We took a few groceries with us and used most.

Sunburn and Bugs: We used lots of SPF 30 and 45 and didn’t get burned at all. We also put sunscreen in our hairlines and parts in our hair and a thin spot on top of one of our heads (I won’t mention who). We used Burt’s Bee’s and Cutter (95.5% Deet) and still managed to get bites but don’t know when it happened because the bugs seemed to stay away. I got lots and lots of bites that really itched badly the last day. We also each got a little rash – maybe from the sun or heat or bug spray? Mine went away with a couple applications of Aloe and RJ still has his rash and his itches.

Phone Service: Our Verizon phone worked on analog very well all over JVD and West End although we only used it a couple times.

I know many of you may think we did too much with our trip to Anegada and our Daysail, but it was perfect for us. We had an opportunity to visit other places that will help us when we plan our next trip. It also reinforced how much we really enjoyed our stay on Jost. I think that I will be talking to some friends about planning another vacation on a boat. We had the most relaxing vacation ever and will treasure this vacation forever.

A huge thanks goes to everyone who helped us plan our trip and for those of you who posted questions and answers that helped us just as much if not more than our own questions!
