Planning an upcoming vacation to Spring Bay Area in VG. My preschooler is gluten, dairy, peanut and nut free (allergies). We are coming in from the States. Any ideas on what I can expect to find available to buy there? I can pack some things, but would prefer to buy there! Thank you for any help! (She's 3 and worth it!)

Or any idea of stores on the island? I haven't been there in over 20 years!

Does she eat protein, vegetables, and fruit? If so, you should have ZERO problem. Good grocery stores on VG.

If you're looking for processed, American, "gluten free" product? You probably won't have all that much luck...

I am gluten and dairy free and didn't have a problem on VG. I was able to find almond milk (I can't remember if it was at Rosie's or Bucks - sorry). We typically end up buying groceries at both Rosie's and Bucks in order to get everything we need. Buck's had some great cut up fruit salads in their prepared food section and I ate these every day. Most of the restaurants on the island offer salads and one or two grilled meats. If you want a splurge, visit Little Dix Bay - wonderful Gluten Free bread in addition to fantastic food. We are heading down in July and I will bring some rice cakes in my bag so that I can have a snack anywhere. Have fun & don't worry - you will be able to find plenty for your daughter to eat.

There is a store called Natures Way in Spanish Town. I haven't actually visited there but did go to their sister store in East End, Tortola where they were extremely helpful. Lots of gluten free products, which is what I need, so didn't look further. They have a website, so do a simple search and it should come up. If you let them know know well in advance (three weeks+.) I am sure they can arrange most everything you need. Good luck.

I'm severely allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and legumes, but a big consumer of dairy and grains. I got extremely ill some years ago from one of Tortola's top restaurants. It was run, at the time, by an Italian, and I don't think they "got" the allergy thing - probably some nut liqueur in the dessert. Also, there is less understanding of cross contamination. If you eat out, make sure the kitchen staff don't pull one of those "I'll take the walnut off the top of the salad" things.

I saw a large gluten-free section at the Road Town Riteway, so you could probably order from there and have it sent over.

Was looking for Glutenfree Pasta last week, none at Riteway but did find some at Onemart.

Hi

These are past quotes :

Thank you Carol....and now on to the answer!

This is from a previous forum that went down a political road as well.....I only copied and pasted part of the forum that seemed helpful.

There are two Nature’s Way stores on Tortola (in Road Town and in East End), but they have a store on Virgin Gorda as well. Check out their web site at http://www.naturesway.vg . There’s a product finder that allows you to “Choose Category”, one of which is “Gluten Free”. You’ll be amazed at the listings. I noticed they have xanthan gum under “Baking Ingredients”, which would be a major problem for you to find in the BVI, and useful if you are staying in a villa where you can bake. The other interesting thing is that you can order from them online. By the way, they also have a deli - there’s a menu on the site (available at least on Tortola - not sure about VG). We didn’t stop to investigate the store on VG (284-495-5099) but it’s at the corner of Crab Hill and Millionaire Street (across from the church). (from Stoneyusaf 04/06/15)

Hi Jim and Sue

Thanks stoney for supplying the copy of my original post. Just a few added remarks - don’t be scared off by the prices on the web site, as they refer to bulk sales (hence the 4x and 6x, etc. next to the shipping weights). The items are available individually at the stores, but it might be a good idea to call the store to see if the item is in stock. In addition to the phone number given above for the store in The Valley on VG, here are the others' numbers: 495-2852 for Fat Hogs Bay in the East End area in Tortola and 494-6393 for the store in Road Town. The one in Road Town requires some tricky driving to find their parking area - best to find a parking spot near the rotary and walk there. The one at Fat Hogs Bay is right on the main drag and on the left side of the road when going in the direction of Trellis Bay.

The GF breads they carry are made by Schar - the only Udi products they have are cookies and the like. One thing we always do is bring down GF crackers and GF bagels from home, plus a loaf of GF bread from home. The usual molds that attack regular bread don’t seem to like GF bread but it’s still a good idea to put it in the fridge as soon as you get there. They carry Red Mill GF mixes and xanthan gum if you want to bake. (Guar gum caused stomach problems for me tho.)

The deli menus don’t list many explicitly GF items but most of what they serve is certainly gluten free. They have one of my favorites dishes - callaloo soup, and plenty of smoothies.

Peace
Dugg & Chris

Will check with customs, but we have to be careful of cross contamination. So... Can I bring in say Udi bread? GF Cupcake mix if it's unopened? I emailed a few stores there, but haven't heard from them yet.
