Hi Friends,
Where do you recommend as the best spot to go fishing in the BVI's? We didn't go on our last trip but we want to do it on the next one. (We are already having the BVI itch) <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Joy.gif" alt="" />

We just got back this past Saturday. We trolled most everywhere we went and spent quite a bit of time specifically going after fish. Caught one Spanish Mackerel out in the Drake halfway between Roadtown and Norman. Left Norman early one morning to fish the south drop and only caught one barracuda coming around the south side of Norman. We trolled all the way to Anegada with no luck. Disappointed, we left Anegada and went north a few miles to deeper water before heading Jost. We caught two yellow fin tuna, another Spanish and a couple barracudas. That was long day but one of the tuna was 10-12 lbs and fantastic on the grill that night at Diamond Cay.

We've found the waters 1-2 miles north of Tortola in the morning to have baitfish breaking on the surface and larger catchable fish below.

I have heard that the south drop about 2 miles south of Peter and Norman Islands is a place to pick up Mahi and small tuna.

There is a wreck just inside the shelf straight out from Loblolly/Anegada. Always caught big wahoo there

Do you guys bring your own gear or is there a place you like to rent from?

Thanks for all the tips!

I am sure glad you didn't tell me that while we were there Tuesday or we would have been going around Anegada for wahoo!!

Thanks for handling the safari truck. We had a blast driving around the island.

I bring a couple of "Cuban yo-yo's" and a multi-piece travel rod with a Penn 330i reel and 30lb test line.

The avid fisherman in our group seemed to have had the best luck in the morning while we were sailing from Anegada on our way to Cane Garden Bay.

He had good luck just dropping a line around sunset wherever we were for the evening as well. Didn't catch something every night but had lots of activity. Our last trip was a great fishing trip for him. He got some lures that some locals recommended and they worked very well.

The North drop is the place to go for the choice fish. Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, wahoo and Mahi. The north side of Tortola is full of Bonito but they are not very good to eat even though they look exactly like a small Tuna. We were catching so many in early May sailing from Monkey point to JVD that we had to pull the lines in to make any progress.

George: what baits do ya'll troll with? We had two boats, tried trolling drop off from Norman to Cooper. Also, tried trolling inside Drake all the way to NS. And also trolled to Anegada. Never got a hit trolling. This was two weeks ago.

We did wade fish Sandy Caye and caught a lot of small but nice grouper. Also, caught one barracuda off Guanna Island.

zig-zag over the drop, watch your depth sounder, when it starts flashing it lost the bottom. we use squid patterns and only motor when we are seriously fishing.

we're planning on fishing the south drop, much closer to land...
hoping to hook up...
we'll be trolling every time we move! tuna toast, spoons, etc. some on top, some on a diver about 10-15' down.
most will be naked, but I also ordered a few pre-rigged ballyhoo. we'll be saving those for the drop!
can't wait, wheels up in 21 days!

We just finished our charter. Trolled everywhere we went. We hit the south drop for a while and hooked a barracuda. Nothing else the rest of the trip. We admittedly have no idea what we're doing...just used frozen ballyhoo most of the time. We enjoyed the fishing enough that we'll do it again and maybe try a little harder and do some extra research.

We've had good luck on the south drop and on the north side of Tortola, like when sailing from Monkey Point to Jost.

I have a couple of blog posts on fishing:
