Well, as usual, I will get a folky Anegada report. We were there from July 5 to 23. Had company from Germany, a former exchange student (Jan) and his girlfriend (Viktoria). Jan did our website for Lavenda Breeze and he and I have been talking about a site dedicated to Anegada alone, instead of all of the BVI, but we have decided not to do that for now.

Had occassion to meet up with Jessica and Mike and Jennifer K. from this board. Also had a nice dinner with Erik and Nahla (if anyone knows them) from Texas and California (but married). Nice to meet you folks in person. I'm still waiting to meet Ray Snow !!! Who isn't??

On Anegada, Lowell is almost finished building the hangar for his little airplane. It's right off the airport grounds on land he rented from the airport. Corrugated metal building. He's eager to get it done before any stormy weather. Things at the hotel seem to be running fine. It was actually quite busy there while we were there. Lots of dinners served every night. The annual boat race sponsored by the Anegada Reef Hotel was held during this time and was a good success, I think, though I didn't go to the party. Live music that Saturday night.

Cow Wreck still loved lovely. The beach was fantastic there, as usual. Belle and Lauren were on island and Wendell wasn't. I think he went to Florida for business.

I didn't see Wilfred the entire trip and never made it down to his cottages on the West End, so I don't have anything to report there.

Big Bamboo is jumping. Diana, Glenn, Vidal, NanshaLee, Alysia, Silon (Sylvester), etc. all doing well, playing dominoes, serving great, great meals. The day I left I went by to pay my bill. Diana was beside herself. The kids from the sailing camp (about 50 of them) had come for swimming and snorkeling and lunch. It was still 11 a.m., but they had the joint jumping and were eating the place out of hamburgers. What do kids know!!??? LOBSTER, guys (and girls). The volleyball court was a very active place that morning. Nice. But it did break the sort of breezy, easy typical pace of the place.

For those of you who know about it, the digging is finished for phase one of the water plant. Soon they will be installing the reverse osmosis system to make some pure water for people in the Settlement. Phase 2 brings it down to Setting Point. Phase three beyond that. This will take years.

Meanwhile, it's most likely that the road will be continued from "the bridge" down to "the signs" sometime this winter. I think the contracts have been awarded. They have been putting up speed limit signs. Someone made the 30's into 80's and then the police or someone made them back to 30's. What is so odd to me is that once they put the roads in, and people speed, they will probably have to make speed bumps, like on VG and Tortola. What's the point of that? Anegada was already one big speed bump!

Three huge barges of topsoil were sent over from Tortola to Anegada. They were left over from the airport project. They were left on the dock at Setting Point for a few weeks and then finally some has been shipped to the agricultural station down on the West End and some sent to the ballfield by the school and community center to improve those grounds. Also, I think the government building will get some to help beautify the grounds. Local residents are apportioned some to be given at a later date to help in their gardens and yards. The government seems interested in help the Anegadans to do more growing. The ag center is also getting a water purification plant soon.

Two cottages are almost completed on Loblolly Bay, closer to Flash of Beauty than where we are. They are one-bedroom, colorful cottages, made of wood, facing the sea. They are part of the Anegada Watersports project that Ken Norman (Mac Norman's nephew --- Mac of Mac's Campground) has begun. I already put the URLs for that on the bulletin board here. If I'm not mistaken, two more will be begun soon so that four will be available for this peak season.

Pam's Kitchen is closed. Pam is up in Oregon for a while. Her son Aaron has been running the place with his wife Rebecca. Becca was expecting their second child, so they went back to the US to have the baby and won't return until November when, I hope, they open the bakery again.

Randall and Linda are doing well. Apparently there are plans afoot for them to build a residence for Jim and his wife, the folks from Scotland (I think) who have been helping them out at Neptune's for the past year or so. Looks like this is going to be a permanent arrangement. Meanwhile, Neptune's has its new rooms ready, bringing their total, I believe, to seven or eight. The restaurant served us some great tuna, though this trip I had spear fish, something I've never had before, and it was very good indeed. I always appreciate the good, kind service that we get at Neptunes --- and fine food.

Clinton Vanterpool got a new flat-bottomed boat for bone fishing and has been pretty busy taking people out. There is more and more interest in bonefishing and Clinton and the Faulkner boys (Kevin and Garfield) also seem quite busy guiding people.

Folks in the Settlement we saw all seem to be doing well. Mac looked good. Hanging around Faulkner's store in the afternoon as usual. Stan and Doris are great! Dotsy is busy in the bakery. Romalia is well, handling the taxis and the airflights for Clair Aero. My wife, Reggie, had a wonderful talk, she reported, with Tony Smith about the "old days" fishing in Anegada. Maybe I can get her to report on that sometime.

As for us, we took a nice side-trip to Virgin Gorda to show our houseguests the Baths and VG. Went on a Saturday (thank you Warren Wheeler for the charter flight) early in the morning. First had breakfast at the Flying Iguana while waiting for Mahogony Car Rentals. Hung around the Baths for the morning. Went to Top of the Baths for lunch and a swim in their pool. Cleaned up at Guavaberry/SpringBay where we were treated royally, as usual, by Valerie and Tina. Then drove over to Leverick Bay to see Spyglass Villa and visit with Lew and Kim (of this board) who we have gotten to know a bit while on Anegada. They had some guests from California. So we were a group of eight having some nice cocktails and dip and chat in their wonderful house. Then drove back to Spanishtown for a great dinner at Chez Bamboo, with Valerie added to the mix. Such a nice time!

Sunday we went grocery shopping for stuff to bring back to Anegada to get us through another week. Snorkeled from the beach at Spring Bay, sat in the sling chairs, slept, etc. until it was time to fly back. Virgin Gorda is a lovely place.

So, I think that's about all to report for now. I'm sure there are more adventures, but I can't remember them now.

George

Edited by Administrator on 8/8/01 02:59 PM.
