According to this Daily Herald story, the state of emergency declared in France has been extended to all overseas territories, including St. Martin.

Logically their (the governments) next step - best to have all necessary papers, rental, identification, on hand for possible inspection by authorities. If now required to carry original passport (not photocopy) then do so to avoid major hassles.

Makes perfect sense...especially after the reported attempt to enter the country via PJIA by three with bogus passports.

Yea, was at the harbor going over to Anguilla and you could see they are more thorough than usual with the checks.

On our visit to Philipsburg yesterday, there was a marked increase in security personnel, some of them with dogs.

Glad to see the extra security on the island. To bad it took the tragedy in Paris to do this.

We noticed this earlier as well, perhaps as a result of the robberies and shootings. We saw the dogs and patrols in Philipsburg prior to the Paris attacks.
Didn't help prevent Caribbean Gems from getting robbed last Friday though.

Leona,

Do you have any more details about the robbery at Caribbean Gems? I didn't see anything in the papers but then I've been preoccupied with things and haven't been watching them too closely. Hopefully, nobody was hurt? That said, 'things' can be replaced and are probably/possibly insured. Do you know which store it was - the original location across from the Holland House or the newer one further down the street?

TY in advance for any knowledge.....

Respectfully,

pat

Pat, no one was hurt and they are all okay. I didn't say anything earlier as it was the same day as the Paris attacks.

I wouldn't be too worried about being bothered here.

First, only one half of the Island is in State of Emergency.

Second, there are not enough police personnel to do much and Paris is certainly not going to send any extra ones.

Why did you reply to me? I never once said that I was worried or bothered.

I am all for the increased powers. Perhaps this will give them the opportunity to do something about the problems in Sandy Ground and Orleans area.

That person is brand new to the board, so perhaps they just responded to the most recent post, which even people who are long time members do. But I do agree that standard crime is probably more of a risk in SXM.

Not so sure all will be safe. Look what just happened in Mali. The radicals have no boundarys. Glad countries are taking all the precautions available.

Regardless, discussion of terror in general is outside the realm of this board. Before this goes further into politics/etc, will end this one here.
