Joe,
Lots 1&2 are in Robert Moses STATE Park and the state only allows topless. Lot 5 is also Robert Moses but you had to walk the half mile into the Fire Island National Seashore to reach Lighthouse, a federal beach. NAC is still working with the US Dept of the Interior on legal issues and it is a time consuming and costly endeavor. Gunnison Beach in NJ or Cherry Grove are your only legal beach options.

I haven't been there in over 40 years but Cherry Grove and the Pines were traditionally gay oriented. Having said that there has been a trend over the last several years where straight/gay nude beach demarcation lines have faded a bit. Now we have people from both persuasions sitting wherever they like in such places as Gunnisons in NJ and in SXM. Everyone enjoying a good beach day together. Harmony day's rein supreme at these nude beaches and I suspect they do at Cherry Grove as well.
