Wow, I never even realized this great recipe forum was here. This is probably the place for my questions.

I am not studied on rums, although I spend some time drinking it. I would like some suggestions on best choices for our upcoming charter order from Carribean Cellars. I would like suggestion for a sipping rum high quality and then suggestions for moderate priced rum for pankillers and mixed drinks. Here are the choices from the Carribean Cellars sheet:

Good stuff:
Appleton 12 yrs
Clement Canne Bleu
Clement Premiere Canne
Brugal Extra Viejo

Mixing stuff:
Don Q
Appleton Gold Special
Myers
Paradise
Whalers
Pussers

or from Bobby's - Mt Gay?

Thanks for your help, Geri

Probably best to ask this question on the People Talk Forums...
You'll get more answers...

I have some Clement Premiere Canne and like it, more than Appleton at least. Have not yet tried Brugal, but if you can find it my favorite that I have found in SXM is Admiral Rodney which I of course found at Gulmohar's. While I would say Admiral Rodney is a can not lose pick much of this comes down to personal taste.

For mixing my favorite has become Mount Gay Eclipse. I am not much for Myers or Don Q.

Have a great trip what ever you get,
T

I will have to find some Brugal to try.

Todd--Brugal is good stuff. You should try it. It is my favorite at the moment. Years ago, we toured the Brugal factory in the DR. We bought a liter of the 'cheap stuff' at $1 a liter. The 'good stuff' was $2 a liter. Guess we should have splurged, huh??

After the post I read about it, and look forward to sampling it. I now have 30 top shelf rums at my bar and would like to add Brugal to them.

I will retract my previous suggestion for mixing. If I had my choice for a mixing rum it would be Santiago De Cuba, such a nice flavor for a mixing rum. Of course I do not have any but if I did I would save for special times . Of course I know you can get it at Gulmohars but not sure about other places.

Cheap liquor, old ice, bad mixers are three things my Grandfather would have never tolerated. If I do nothing else but make him proud then I have succeeded in life.

Cheers,
TB

Hey Geri, while you and the crew were at Spyglass Villa, we were pouring Mount Gay Rum which I don't see on the list. Since then, I've switched to Myers which has a much deeper flavor but everyone has individual tastes.

Sure wish we were going to be there for the TTOL cruise but, instead, we're sending my brother Steve and sister-in-law, Carol, as one of the guests aboard AristoCat II.

Please be gentle on them. HA!

Fondly,

I love amber or dark rum , and always buy Appleton, smooth, and great tasting ...... I find Myers and Pusser too over powering, if I can't find Appleton I go for Mt gay.

Appleton is WAAAY too sweet, to my taste, in fact, any Jamaican rum seems very sweet to me.

Just add more coke. Problem solved!

For sipping rum I would get Sebastians rum, it is the best for sipping.

For mixing rum I would buy Cruzin, inexpensive good taste.

Just keep singing...
"Put da lime in da coconut, and add it to da rum"...
over and over again...

I just picked up a bottle of Brugal for $24 here in Portland, look forward to trying it.

Also, picked up a close out a bottle of Pyrat Rum Cask 1623 for a bargain at $145, such a bargain.

Oregon started closing out a lot of higher prices liquors, it has been good for me.
