Good evening. I am loosely planning a trip for my wife's 40th in January 2017. Are there any events not to be missed? My dates are flexible. Thanks.

Well, I 'd think your wifes' 40th you may not want to miss. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" /> Other than that, January isn't all that exciting a month eventwise, other than Old Years Eve/New Years Day.

I might try to be there for a full moon party, but not a necessity.

The weather should be decent I assume? Mid 80s, low 70s? What about roughness of the seas? (Sorry for my landlubber terms) My wife and I were in the BVI's in June of 2012 and the seas were perfect. Will they be any more rough in January?

January can bring the swells and Christmas winds. Can get pretty rough on the North shore.

Just so I am clear, what is considered the North Shore? The north side of each island?

As relative new visitors to the BVI's, would it be a deal breaker and better to wait a month or so?

What exactly do you want to do while you are there? Beach? Sailing? Give me an idea and I'll give you my 2 cents. We vary our winter visits, anywhere from January to end of March. February is basically "the season".

We like January to get away from the cold at home. Have been just about every Jan since 2002. Weather can be calm, can be windy, can be big swells, can be flat, can get some rain. However it is usually great. Probably on average a little more wind than later in year but not an issue for us when planning. You will need to deal with whatever weather happens no matter what month you go and I doubt anyone can give you a forecast for next year. Go for it and have fun.

January has the advantage of being a bit of a "shoulder season" with the holiday crowds gone. Everything is less crowded, airfares tend to be a lot more favorable in the Jan 8-24 range +/-(at least in prior years). Never know what weather will do, but there are always plenty of options to work around any weather issue.
Personally, we are looking at a mid January to mid March stay for 2017.

your Captain should know comfortable anchorages in a north swell
