Hi All:

We will be sailing the BVIs for our 7th time this summer. We are bringing a family of newbies whom have sailed on our monohull to Catalina for the weekend a few times.

They are very excited as are we. In anticipation of our trip we starting to plan our itinerary of course based on weather. We typically eat aboard more often than not, but this trip we might eat out more. There seem to be a few new restaurants with good reviews.

Here is the list of restaurants we are planning on and I appreciate any comments regarding our selections:

Scaramouche - dinner
Peter Island Resort - lunch
Leverick Bay - Mocko Jumbie BBQ
Hog Heaven - Lunch
Wonky Dog - Dinner
Cow Wreck - Lunch
Soggy Dollar - Lunch

We typically stop for Happy Hour at every destination which will include Pirates Bight, Cooper Island, Marina Cay and Saba.

I welcome any comments or suggestions. Thanks

Buyer beware at "Pirates" at The Bight. I ordered "a glass of red" ..he poured me a glass of $10 a bottle Beringer ( maybe less)for $20 and added service. When I challenged him, he then showed me a wine list with the B the most expensive. I told him to thank Jareki and where to put the remains of the bottle..he laughed. Dont tip the bartenders cos, like Little Dix, they add service for drinks..b*%%sh#t in MHO..

If you can I would add Suger Mill to the list.

Mal, only a guy from wine country would be ballsy enough to order a "glass of red" ANYWHERE, much less in the BVI! You never know what kind of swill you'll get!

We try to stick to whites at all but the best restaurants because they're served chilled everywhere... Reds are served at "room temperature", which is generally between 75 & 80 in the islands so it's a waste of money even on a "good" bottle. At Pirate's we always share some La Poussie.*

* a decent Sancerre

If I can't be a good example, I'll just have to be a horrible warning. [Linked Image]

Yep on Pirates, super expensive drinks. My kids and nephew got a round of Bushwackers there. I think there was a $10 upcharge for glass service. The land toilet was a hit, though. $100 + service charge for six drinks.

Cheers, RickG

Red is the only wine I drink and never have a problem as I look at the wine list before ordering. Many places on VG serve the reds slightly chilled which is especially nice for a good red Zin. However, my usual drink of choice most of the day there is Cruzan!

It's good to see someone else is not letting go of 2015

Agree with all your choices - good places - except Soggy Dollar. November trip we ate lunch there - food just isn't that good for the $ and the wait. We'll be trying someplace else next month.

Unless Scaramouche has really improved, I'd point the dinghy to the other shore at West End and eat at the Fish and Lime. Decent portions, much better pricing and a wider selection. Cooper Island Beach Club has in my opinion the best happy hour in the BVI. Love watching the traffic heading in just after the bell rings. And the scramble for the last mooring ball is always entertaining.

Great Tips everyone. Thank you.

We typically stay clear of red wine on sailing vacations just too hot to enjoy a nice big cab. If we opt for wine its usually a French rose.

We may skip Pirates. They seemed to have upped their prices significantly since the huge renovation and I don't like feeling "taken." The last time we were there ( 2 years ago) I remember them not letting us sit inside without ordering food or something like that. The vibe certainly has changed.

Soggy Dollar we always enjoy the roti, but perhaps there is a better establishment for that. I am sure the feeling has changed since Mic left!

Our first night is a sleep aboard with Voyage so our dinghy will not be available for launch. Is Fish & Lime where Jolly Roger used to be?

I don't think the food itself has changed that much at Soggy Dollar ... prices may have gone up a little. The big thing is just that when the cruise ships are in, the place is packed and sometimes it takes awhile to get your food.

If there are not any cruise ship passengers filling up the place, you should be okay.

Have not tried Scaramouche yet but am looking forward to it. That said, we like Fish'n Lime. I expect they are two very different places but both good.

I'm a big fan of Bananakeet on Tortola.
This can be accessed easily via taxi from Cane Garden Bay.

Unfortunately we aren't really staying anywhere on Tortola other than our first sleep aboard night in Sopers. Given how hectic that day will be unpacking/provisioning etc, we wish to dine close to the marina.

I have heard Bananakeet is amazing, I guess another time smile

I noticed that you really enjoy the roti at Soggy Dollar. I suggest you try Gertrude's in White Bay. We had great roti there back in October. We always go there now instead of SDB.

I'm sure the "feel" of SDB affected my enjoyment of the food there when we visited. it was crowded but the woman barking at customers and yelling for people to fill out their forms to order was just not enjoyable.

Thanks again. Gertrudes it is for roti instead of SDB. I remember our food taking ages when we were there last!

Also now in need of plan B Sunday night. We are sleeping aboard our Voyage Cat on a Sunday night and Scaramouche restaurant is not open on Sunday evenings. We can however have pizza in their bar/lounge but after a long day of hard work, we may need something a little more substantial. Thoughts?
