Hubby and I were at Cupecoy a couple days ago and there was some guy that came down to the beach by his self. He then went behind some rocks and undressed. He then came out naked as a baby. That's fine, but what he started to do with himself was not. Highly disturbing when someone is standing in full view on the beach playing with his junk. We ended up packing and leaving. Here's where it get's creepy. We didn't even notice that the guy had followed us up to the parking area and started screaming at us that we were racist! No dude, we just don't care to see anyone masturbate in public. My husband and I calmly drove away but I have to say, it really did freak me out.

Not sure what I would have done but clearly the person has problems. Too bad that he hurt your beach experience but your were probably wise to exit and allow him to his own weird world.

Over the last 15 years we have witnessed similar incidents at cupecoy, happy bay, and baei rouge. They are mostly attention seekers. Most pay them no attention and they leave. Yeah, they have some issues, but we have not seen it go any farther.

They used to be referred to as the "bushwhackers". It was a common occurrence years ago. Been years since hearing this happening.

I left out that we just saw it again this year the first week of May at cupecoy. Prior to this year we had not seen it for 2-3 years.

That's all well and good but very disturbing I'm sure when the guy follows you into the parking lot and screams at you. That is not ok.

Were there other people on the beach? Perhaps the gendarmes need to pay a visit to Cupecoy more often. I wonder if Dany is aware of this as it is certainly bad for his beach bar business.Cupecoy is such a pretty natural beach; it is sad to hear about things like this happening there.

This is the Dutch side, not Gendarmes turf.
Lucky that we have never witnessed anything like this. T

Yes, Todd sorry about that. I guess the Dutch police are too busy to bother with these incidents.

Guessing about 7-8 years ago at Cupecoy we witnessed the Dutch police take one of them off the beach in handcuffs for the same act. Danny does keep an eye on these guys.

I personally have never been that fond of Cupecoy, in part because of this type of issue. Because there is full time security at Club O, thankfully, such incidents there are much less prevalent.

That is why we always go to Club O. It is good to have security there to handle jerks.

I agree with having the security at Club O, which we go to every trip. We just really enjoy going to different beaches everyday. This is what attracted to us to St. Martin 15 years ago. We enjoy all the beaches and will not let a few exhibitionists destroy that for us. BTW, I think we know the guy at cupecoy that the post originated about. He is a little on the metally disturbed side, however we have never seen him follow people into the parking area yelling. Danny will take care of that, trust me. Sorry that happened to you and hope you return to Cupecoy to enjoy the peace and quiet we have enjoyed there for every trip.

The "bushwhackers" used to stay in the bushes. I guess they have become more bold.

Unfortunately, through the years, we have experienced "ALL OF THE ABOVE" at Cupecoy and at Baie Rouge. Ironically, when you go to THOSE beaches, it is best to sit as close to other couples as possible, because there is power in numbers. We still love those beaches!

First of all, there were other couples at the beach. We warned another couple as we left the beach since the wife had decided to walk down the beach a ways by herself and wasn't really paying attention to any thing else but the waves coming in. We were both in bathing suits and did not nude sunbathe. Even if we were, I don't feel like that is giving permission to jerk off in front of me. The part that scared me was him following us into the parking lot screaming at us. I have no clue how me not wanting to see you play with your junk makes me racist. I don't want to see anybody doing that, thank you very much. There was even a family there with a couple young kids earlier that left before this happened. Thank goodness for that!

Oh brother, here we go again. The OP stated that there had been a creepy incident - that's all. At no time were you asked for your views on what is or isn't acceptable. We're all exposed to things that we'd prefer not to be, and usually try to avoid them. And the whole legal/illegal issue has been discussed here ad infinitum. I say it's a gray area (define nudity). Time to end this one - nothing new here.

I agreed with you it is very disturbing. Thank you for posting. We have had incidents at Cupecoy mostly before the homes at Shore Point were built. It is a very unsettling experience and one that should be reported to the local authorities and here as well. It is really a safety issue. Hope it doesn't put a damper on your stay.

My disclaimer here - I am not a nudist but at the same time, I'm willing to concede there's a time and a place for everyone and everything. Regarding nudity on the Dutch side, it is and has always been verboten but that said, it has always been practiced ergo accepted on Cupecoy so there should be no question that people might expect to encounter it there. But they should NOT have to encounter the other. My best suggestion would be to let Dany know about it and beyond that, if you are so inclined, you might want to advise the Dutch police to be aware and perhaps prepared to stop by now and then. People have to learn to coexist in a climate that isn't always perfect and that would be both nudists and textiles. Orient Beach at Club O - you couldn't have a better beach location. Anywhere else on the island, please use discretion and respect for others on the beach and seak out like-minded beach goers of whichever persuasion suits your personal preferences. Mod for the day? What is the "law" that you think makes the issue clear? I would be very interested if you can cite to a particular law than makes simple nudity on a beach of Sint Maarten illegal. If the law in the Netherlands applied, then I would believe that simple nudity on Cupecoy is "legal" because traditionally tolerated. Is the law different in Sint Maarten?

Yes here we go again
Skinny dipping has been around for ages all over the world and for someone to oppose it so vehemently in a country where it is more accepted than others, well I just have to say keep your opinions to yourself or dont visit St Martin or do visit St Martin and go to one of the 30+ beaches where you'll never see a nudist
By the way, if you ever visit Germany, Finland, Austria or Holland, don't enter the hotel sauna or go to any SPA
And stay away from the English Garten in Munich
It would be "bothersome" as you say

St. Martin/ St. Maarten has 37 beaches. 4 or 5 of them you may encounter nudity. Why would one choose one of the 4 or 5 and complain that they saw nudity when they have 32 other choices ? Nobody deserves to witness unwanted sexual activity at any of the beaches. We believe the cruise ship industry has changed the culture of Orient Beach. I guess money always talks.

My reason for posting the incident was to warn others what we experienced. I could care less if people go naked or wear bathing suits. Just my choice to wear a bikini. My concern is for other people who may also have children with them, to watch out for this behaviour. My husband is built like a brick shithouse but this guy was pretty well built and was a little off mentally. Usually a bad combination. Who's to say he wouldn't have started something more had we not already been getting in our vehicle? Just everyone going there just be a little more aware of your surroundings and take care!

It seems some people here again blame the victim (all too typical these days). You imply that if one goes nude on the Dutch side, you should expect "bushwackers" to pay you a visit. If the OP had been fully clothed, and just there with the family to sight-see, would it have made the "wacker" any less obtrusive? For whatever the reason, those people do what they do for an obvious reason, and we should not "blame the victim" that was unfortunate enough to experience his behavior. As the OP later stated, this post was for a heads-up to anyone who may visit the Beach to be prepared for something like that to occur.
