Regular testing is free in the US. If you need testing for quick turnaround for travel, that is where you might have to pay. I can tell you testing is not free in Europe for Travel.
Here is an example where it costs 150 Euros to get testing done for travel in Europe with quick turnaround. I have also seen in Amsterdam where they will test you at the airport and you have to pay 185 Euros per test. Others have posted in this thread that in Canada they could not get a covid-19 test for travel.
