Hi. I thought the Bight was well protected too so I appreciate your comments. It will make it easier just to stay there overnight. I guess I did too much research. Below is what I found. This is why I asked about Great Harbor.
While The Bight at Norman Island is a popular and generally well-protected harbor in the British Virgin Islands, it is not the best protected harbor from ESE winds.
Here's why:
Open to the West: The Bight is a large bay that is open to the west. This means it is well-protected from the prevailing easterly trade winds, which are common in the BVI.
ESE Exposure: However, winds from the East-Southeast (ESE) can blow directly into The Bight, potentially making conditions less comfortable.
Other Protected Harbors: There are other harbors in the BVI that offer better protection from ESE winds. Some examples include:
Great Harbour, Peter Island: Located on the western side of Peter Island, this harbor is generally well-protected from most wind directions, including the east.
Benures Bay, Norman Island: Situated on the eastern side of Norman Island, this bay offers good shelter and can be more protected from ESE winds compared to The Bight.
Lee Bay, Great Camanoe Island: This bay on the western side of Great Camanoe offers calm waters and good protection from easterly winds.
Therefore, while The Bight is a convenient and often calm anchorage, if the forecast specifically calls for strong ESE winds, you might find better shelter in one of the other harbors mentioned.
