During our December trip I had a few hundred dollar denomination checks left from a previous trip and I had no problem using them. We did find a few places that didn't accept them but those places all accepted credit cards so it wasn't a big deal. You can definitely still cash them at the larger grocery stores and at the casinos but you must provide your picture ID if I'm not mistaken. One of the places that wouldn't accept them any longer happened to be our favorite restaurant and he explained to us it wasn't his policy but the policy of the bank he does business with and we subsequently heard this from several other businesses, too, so I suspect that is the reason though I really don't understand the banks reasoning in the first place.
While I have no problem getting them from our local Webster Bank, and free of charge at that, I'm told lately the hardest part of using TCs these days is finding them in the first place. So good luck on all counts. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

I travel all over the world and hardly carry any cash. I use a combination of credit cards (with no foreign transaction fees), debit cards and my ATM card for those few instances when I need cash in local currency. Fletch is absolutely correct but there are still a few of us "human Dino's" still able to travel and for which old habits die hard. It's far easier and more comfortable to transport cash in the form of TCs for some of us at a certain age level. Truth is, whatever your choice, make it be comfortable for yourself because in the end, it really is a matter of whatever works for you.

Our local AAA hasn't had them for a few years. Our bank stopped offering them even before that, as did the Amex store in the mall and even the Amex website. We always felt that they were the safest, most convenient way to go. Currency has been made harder and harder to counterfeit, I wish TC's could also.
I'm going where the weather suits my clothes.

Most places on the French side don't take them because the places where they bank don't take them.

We don't have a smart phone. Heck, we don't even use social media. This forum is as far as we get. LOL
