It would probably take more time then some companies have time for, but it seems they might learn a lot by having a first time charter pull the boat away from the dock and then re-dock it before going on their way.

And like you, I think we're all waiting for more info on what happened.

Once you get away from The Moorings and the highly competitive BVI market you will see more of that. Even with a detailed resume, references, and significant boat ownership. We have experienced checkouts on the Chesapeake and in Florida where the last step was to take the boat away from the dock to a set mark on a paper chart near the harbor entrance and then return the staff member to the dock. In Maine we chartered a very complex high end boat. The keys were under the mat. We never met anyone on the way in or out. The damage deposit was $5,000 returned 15 days after charter.
