Starwood and Marriott merged making Marriott the largest hospitality company in the world with over 1 million rooms. Starwood ceases to exist. Marriott now owns/manages what was under the Starwood umbrella:
Westin
Sheraton
The Luxury Collection
Four Points by Sheraton
W Hotels
St. Regis
Le Méridien
Aloft
Element
Tribute Portfolio
Design Hotels

Louise--Do you know if I can transfer now Marriott points to AA? I don't have many points on it now, but I got a Starwood Amex, because I could transfer points to AA. If I can't do that any more, not much reason to keep the card.

Even more interesting news article is the one following the Marriott one. American Airlines had to abort landing due to Gebe blackout !! Something HAS to be done with that electric co.

Sorry Carol I don't know the answer to that question. I only know that SPG points can still be used to book all brands under the Marriott umbrella. The two programs will be merging at some point in the future. As far as using their cc's towards Airline points you would have to give them a call. Sorry I couldn't help.

I am now a woman of leisure until I move on to the next new adventure.

Sorry JD, I posted before I read your post on AA.

Perhaps that is why they haven't repaired their sign. Half the lights are burned out and have been like that for almost 3 weeks. Waiting to change it to Marriott.

Carol, while I'm not sure if you can transfer your Marriot points directly to AA, you can transfer them to Starwood, and then to AA. But the value is 3 Marriot to 1 Starwood. I have the AMEX as well and the 80,000 Starwoods points are worth a ton when moved over to Marriot. We have our pick of hotels on Aruba for our Spring '18 trip.

I have Starwood points, or I DID anyway. Guess I need to figure it out.

You get a 5,000 mile bonus when you transfer 20,000 Starwood points to AA, otherwise the transfer ratio is 1 to 1.

Westin had Sxm and St. John and I tried to stay at some Sheraton's to get points but many were some holiday inn which I can tolerate well. That said, we went and visited the Westin finally in June and I can't think of a more sterile environment on SXM. But maybe I'd stay there for free.
So Westin St. John, I guess Marriott points could be amassed for that property.

Do you know if it effects the timeshare at all?

There shouldn't be any effect on the timeshare. The thread title is misleading as there's no indication the hotel is being rebranded and it should remain a Westin. The news story is just stating that Marriott now has a presence on St Maarten since they bought Starwood hotels.
