Just saw a post on tripadvisor that Pinel is closed today due to seaweed.

I doubt if the beach on Pinel is affected. Probably the area around the ferry dock to take the ferry over is inundated with that stinking weed clogging up the dock. Anybody over there to find out?

I just asked Caribbean Paddling and they confirmed that yes nobody could get to the island because of a massive seaweed invasion last night. This is so disappointing. We are staying at SBR and DIVI and with both of those beaches also affected we figured we could escape to Pinel island for some nice beach time. I sure hope it's gone as fast as it came.

I hope so too but don't count on it. Once it's on a beach there isn't much mother nature can do to send it back out to sea. Beach operators and government are the ones that need to clean it up but it will keep coming back with the currents and wind. You might want to go to Mullet or Grand Case to find better weed free waters.

We drove to Cul de Sac this morning. The boats going to Pinel are unable to dock. No one was there. It appeared that there were chairs up on Pinel. So maybe possible to get there from Orient? There is so much seaweed in the water at Cul de Sac AND the smell......

I didn't think SBR was affected.

There is no seaweed at Pinel. It's all at Cul de Sac where the ferries depart from.

Well hopefully it will cleaned up soon. I can only imagine the loss the businesses are taking from this.

Bob, does the seaweed ever get in the channel to Anguilla?

I wonder how they are doing over there....

That's what I said earlier.

Yes the sargassum is in the Anguilla channel as well but it really only becomes a problem when it accumulates on the shore. Usually the boats can dodge around the floating mats but you can really power through it if you have to. It can clog up your cooling system and props and if there is a floating log or piece of lumber, it can damage the boat. I always try to drive around the mats if I can.
