Trip Report 1/27-2/3 2018 Rum-Away
Saturday
This was our first visit since the hurricane. We flew down through Puerto Rico with Southwest Airlines. In San Juan we were picked up by Ian with Island Birds Air Charter.
We were in the air within 10 minutes of getting our luggage. We arrived in Tortola around 3:30 PM and made our way to Hodges Creek Marina, where we were beginning a seven day cruise on the Rum-Away. We had four couples on a brand new Lagoon 45. Our provisions from Rite Way and TECO were already on the boat. The staff with The Catamaran Company was very accommodating, Mynova and Joe even put in some time after hours to begin the walk-through so that we could head out early the next morning. We had dinner at the Tamarind Club. Mary, the bartender, entertained us for a couple of hours and fed us some delicious pizza. Back to the boat for a good night sleep.

Sunday
We completed the walk-through on the boat and headed out before 10 AM. The wind was blowing 25 to 30 knots with overcast skies. We opted for a short sail to Norman Island and give the weather a day to settle. Several of us made our way to the Pirates Bight for a few happy hour drinks. Fun afternoon. That evening we returned for dinner and were treated to a nice meal, both the ribs and fresh fish were delicious.

Monday
The guys headed over to the wreck of the Willy T for a little exploring. Very sad to see it sitting on the beach. Back to the boat with the wind still blowing 25 to 30 knots.
We decided to head for Jost Van Dyke. Great sail and we arrived to find an open mooring at White Bay. The people of Jost have done a great job getting back open and operating. We visited Soggy, Hendo’s and Ivan’s. Everyone was very welcoming and lunch at Soggy was terrific.

Tuesday
Left at 7 am and motored to Marina Cay. We had an opportunity to tour Marina Cay at 10am, only problem was we were at Jost and the ocean was still churned up from the high winds from the previous 2 days. Lots of work going on, happy to see that the Robb White Cottage survived. From there we sailed to The Baths for a lunch and explore stop. Spent a few hours there and then set sail for Leverick Bay. The marina staff was very welcoming and helpful. Took on some ice and water and provisions. The pantry there was as good as ever. (We were told that the laundry was not working yet. I saw in someone else’s post that it was... So not sure if that is not hit or miss right now.) We went up and got a nice table for the Michael Bean Pirate Show. We had a good time laughing and singing along while snacking on some tasty appetizers. Dinner followed at the marina restaurant, very pleased with our stay at Leverick.

Wednesday
Topped off with water and left the marina at 8:30 AM. Our destination was Anegada.
Great sail up there and picked up a mooring around 11. Grilled chicken for fajitas and enjoyed a great feast on the boat. A couple of the crew headed to the Wonky Dog to put in our dinner order. Had a Safari cab pick us up for the ride to Cow Wreck Beach.
Spent an enjoyable afternoon at the beach and even managed to find a couple of conch for a future meal. Beautiful sunset and then off to a great meal at Wonky Dog.

Thursday
After some discussions we decided to sail to Monkey Point at Guana Island for a late breakfast. Fast sail and moored up for a great breakfast of pancakes and sausage.
Our destination for the night was Great Harbour and Foxys but first we decided to explore and snorkel the east end of Jost. Spent a couple hours there and then motored over to Great Harbour. Happy hour with Foxy and he even gave us a sample of a song he is going to record about Irma. Dinner on the boat.

Friday
Our last full day. Left Jost and sailed to The Indians for breakfast and a snorkel. Good visibility made for a good time. The sun was shining but a few rain showers made for a wet motor to Cooper Island where we moored for an early afternoon stop at Haulover Bay. On to Manchioneel Bay for the night. It appears they are making good progress on getting The Beach Club back open. Dinner on the boat, grilled pork tenderloin, amazing. The sunset was beautiful and the tarpon put on quite a show under the Rum-Away’s underwater lights.

Saturday
Up and away by 7:30 am, boat tied up by 8:30 at Hodges Creek. Everybody got the boat situated and our bags off, cab at 10:30, wheels up with Island Birds at 11:15 AM. The Catamaran Company did a great job getting us checked in, terrific staff.

We highly recommend bareboating in the BVI....

Thanks DChapp!

Anybody with news or updates on Cooper or Manchioneel Bay? Anything open yet? Looking for a last night spot before returning our boat to Roadtown in two weeks. Our old standbys of Marina Cay or Trellis are probably out....leaning now toward The Bight and Pirates Bight.

Cheers!

They appear to be making good progress, I think I have read an April opening. I’m going back in a couple of weeks and will do our last night there again, until the Beach Club opens we will eat aboard.
