Hi all,
It's been a long time since I've posted. Been creeping around for the better part of 10 years since our last trip. Felt I needed to say "Hi" again. There are still some familiar names and some new ones. Hope the ones I don't see anymore are still doing well. This board helped us have 3 incredible vacations to still our favorite island, along with the people we took with us. We added another to our clan in the past 10 years and have been focused on making a happy loving boy who loves to travel. We are ready to make our pilgrimage back to the island with boy in tow. We have done the obligatory Disney World trips along with Disney Cruises. Last weekend I asked him the question, "Hey buddy, would you rather go to Disney and the cruise again or be able to go to a island with a beach where we don't have to wear board shorts to swim all day??" His 8 going on 9 year old response, "Island with no clothes!!!" Then I showed him pics of Grand Case with the Lolos, he kept saying "RIBS!!! We need to go DAD!!" This for us was validating that we are doing okay so far raising him. So, where we haven't been in 10 years and they are still cleaning up from last years disaster, I look to all of you for your trip reports and knowledge to help this little family plan their escape from the Northeast back to what where we got swallowed by "sand gravity". Thanks in advance to all of you for keeping the board going and sharing everything you can, it's not a wasted effort. (It's kept me sane in some January and February tundra conditions here in the Northeast as a lineman.) Hope everyone has safe travels.

Hello neighbor and welcome back! I'm sure you'll find everything you need to know here for your up coming trip. Sounds like it gonna be a blast with the boy this time around!

Shaggy,

As a one time employee of NYSE&G and a card carrying member of the IBEW and also as a survivor of the ‘microburst’ that decimated our quiet little town in CT back in mid-May I say kudos to you and all the other linemen who helped in bringing us back to real time after our ordeal. You were all wonderful and worked tirelessly to get us back on the grid.

That said, you know there have been incredible changes to our beloved Island of SXM thanks to ‘that b itch Irma’ but the beaches are still beautiful, the people are still welcoming and the ribs are still yummy. We were unable to make both our November 2017 and our April 2018 so like you, we are eagerly looking forward to our November 2018 trip.

A family member owns a condo there and like almost everyone else across the island she had damage done but she’s been back probably a half dozen times or more since the storm and with each return she tells us of progress being made and of the grateful attitude of the Islanders towards the returnees.

Go, have fun but keep an open mind in that it will be different but it’s still St. Martin.

Respectfully,

pat

@SXMbeacher thanks for the neighborly shout out!! I grew up in Southern Maine, which is technically just Cow Hampshire. Always glad to see some fellow New Englanders around!!

@Pat Thanks for the kind words and advice on SXM. We know it's not even close to what we remember. We have a zero expectations going into our trip other than to meet new people, enjoy the island for what it brings and hopefully help the folks as much as we can while there. St Martin to us is the island and the people, businesses come and go. Was looking at my avatar and realized that place hasn't been around for a long time. And props to you as another New Englander!!!

We are looking at fall of 2019. We are planning on renting a villa in the orient beach area. On our previous trips we rented villa coccinelle, but we also had 3 other couples with us each trip. This trip we are looking for something a little smaller. We have enjoyed doing our own meals and having the luxury of relaxing at a villa after a beach day. I've found a couple om VRBO that we are watchimg.

Hi Mirrodie!
We go to Orient, and once you cross the proverbial line in the sand the shorts come off for the day.
