Looking for a car rental in April. Mainly looked at America, Easyway and Avant Rent A Car. After reading Trip Advisor reviews, i have been leaning towards Avant. I would respect some reviews more so from a TTOLer that has some experience or knowledge on this.

Thanks

America/Cancun seemed to have the best insurance and competitive prices.

I've rented from Easyway and America. I think America may have a better insurance bundle. The cars are a little newer. I did have good service from both companies and airport pickup was easy.

I've read a number of positive reviews of Advant.

Just make certain to take all the insurance.

Karen

Thanks. Looks like America has a little bit better price. We always get the insurances, but mostly want to avoid the games!

There's a Pemex gas station on 307 northbound just after the airport exit. It's on the way to America.

Avoid Fox and Mex, I spent two hours in line in their office on 3/1. Their quoted rate was 150 per week for a van but that did not include basic coverage on the vehicle. Add that and the price was over 500.00 per week.

Thanks everyone. I ended up with American as they seems to have the best coverage and price, plus the reviews were mostly favorable! I'll let you know how it goes.

America is a good choice. As with any rental, take video or photos as you inspect the car when you get it. When returning the car, use the Pemex on the right of Rt. 307 north, just after the exit to the airport. Watch for their small sign that is on the right about .5 miles after the gas station. It is like a mini cloverleaf that will get you back going south on Rt. 307.

I've only driven once in Cancun since summer to go to Costco. I've driven around PDC a number of times and like the mall (movies are in English with Spanish sub-titles). Strolling along 5th Ave. is fun and lots of places to eat. The merchants are all trying to entice one into their shops, but they are friendly. The common line is, "...lady...lady...remember me? I was your waiter the other night..." -- Prices are good in the shops and the beach is only a short walk from 5th Ave.

If you drive to Akumal, you want to go past the pedestrian bridge over Rt. 307, and take the "retorneo," that will access Rt. 307 north. The small entrance to Akumal beach area is just before the pedestrian bridge. It is easy to miss. If you want to go to Yal Ku lagoon, go through the arch and drive about 2 miles to it.
For lunch, you can drive back to La Buena Vida, or back near the arch. I like to park in the lot by La Cueva del Pescador. It is 20 pesos per hour. Then you have a choice of places to eat: La Cueva del Pescador (the owner will take people fishing for $), or walk to Akumal Bay for a swim and lunch at Lol Ha.

We rented a Jeep Patriot from Avant in March. Had it for a week and drove to Chiquila (ferry to Holbox) and Hidden Beach.

Highly recommend Avant - great rate with all insurance included. Newer vehicle and good customer service..

Some of the most used companies I believe are America Car Rental or Infinity Car Rental (Locals) if not you can find the international ones like Europcar (my preferred) or National or Hertz Car Rental. You may find some more info about this on this transportation site: http://www.cancunairporttransportations.com

We rented from Avant in April (based on recommendations from this forum) and they were fabulous to deal with. There are lots of companies advertising lower prices but having the 'all in' insurance is definitely a bonus. They upgraded us to an Aveo from a Gol at no charge and the car had only 2900 Km on it. We would definitely use them next time!

We did rent from America. When we got to the meeting spot outside the airport, there was at least 50 rental car reps and its quite chaotic. We could not find our rep and another company helped us find him as he was on his phone and had his clip board over his logo on his shirt. The shuttle was nice, air conditioned and took like 5-10 mins to get to the office. The office wait and paper work was the longest i have ever experienced anywhere. The car was brand new, but was not ready or prepped for service yet. and had wet paint on the tires and jack where they mark their stuff. When finally delivered, it had no gas, on reserva. first stop was the Pemex gas station just down the road. That whole deal took well over an hour. The return was fast and easy and a return shuttle was waiting. Other than the minor details, all went well and we had no problems. Note, while you wait, they direct you to the nice free map guy, who will offer you free gas if you look at some (time share) vacation properties wink

Sorry I missed your request, hope you had a god trip!
We live near Playa and are in the process of getting our permanent visa so we are still renting, right now for 6 - 8 weeks at a time.

We have used America a lot over the years, best price point (IF you use the "MXN" pesos currency when booking, otherwise not a great price) and decent service. We've also used Avant with just mediocre service and a terrible vehicle. We only used them because they used to meet you at the airport terminal. They no longer do, but their price point is still high. America also does not deliver the vehicle to the airport terminal So if you want that convenience - whether you have several bags or people - ISIS out of Playa does meet you at the terminal. Edgar's price is a little higher and is more in-line with Avant. but he will negotiate with you, and if you pay in pesos the price will be substantially lower. But the service and support is sooo much better than the others.
Note for others - do not stop in the timeshare alley when departing the terminal - don't stop until you are outdoors. The America and other reps will be straight ahead by the curb near the Margaritaville bar.
All of these outfits include insurance in their quote. Don't rely solely on the online pricing with smaller outfits like ISIS - request a quote as the price can fluctuate depending on inventory.

We did have a great trip, thanks! We ate a lot of great food, met a lot of great people, saw some cool sites, and never felt unsafe.

That is a typical report for this area - glad to read that!

I consider myself a person who does not travel often, however, I try to spend the least possible good, if I want to give myself a good luxury, at a good price and if something I have learned is that sometimes, the cheap can be a little expensive. I did not trust large companies, which tell you that you can rent a car with only one dollar, I am a more conservative person so I trusted small companies, which in addition to providing good prices, also gives you too much service full.

I will share a little about my experience on my last trip to Cancun. About two months ago, I visited this city and I was looking for a good car rental agency, I found different options. By accident I fell into the typical ads, to rent a car for a dollar, which is a complete hoax since when you are in the offices, as the article said, they make you pay for the insurance, which in the end you end up paying more of what you had planned.

In the end, I ended up renting my car with a small or good agency rather little known, which is City Car Rental Cancun. I searched for some information about this company, I found that they are very committed to their customers and I ended up renting a car with them (with insurance included).

If my experience is of any use, it is that you plan your trip very well and anticipate the rental of your car, compare prices and find the best option.

We rent only from ISIS Rentadora who delivers to the airport and to hotels. Edgar is honest and trustworthy, no surprises.

I can also advise a very good service for car rental https://rental24h.com I have been using this service for about a year, and so far there are no complaints against it. In addition, support in Thailand is from this service, six months ago traveled there with his wife, and would be pleasantly surprised

Do research carefully, this is a site that shows all of the rental companies, and the best prices are 5 -7 times (5X - 7X!!!) higher than ISIS, America, or EasyWay who many frequent visitors rent through...
WOW...

I have been trying several services from little known companies, especially to get out of the routine of big companies, and I have liked these:

City Car Rental
Val Car Rental

for shuttle services from the airport, I can recommend these, their rates vary, but the service was good at all,

eTransfers
FerAltar

Leave your recommendations, boys, to grow my list of recommendations. rofl

We stay ”in the routine” using the outfits we know and trust to avoid surprises. Some are larger but a couple have just a few vehicles and treat us like family...
