Anyone have any experience here. My husband and I are going to Morocco next May and since they are close thought we would end with a week in the Canary Islands. We were looking at places on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Looking for beautiful beaches, good food and possibly some hiking.

Living in England, my wife and I have visited most of the Canary Islands, which are just a short-haul flight away and are ideal for winter sun.

If you're looking for lovely beaches, it has to be Fuerteventura. Some of the beaches are absolutely stunning! You need to rent a car to get to the best beaches (car hire is cheap, check out Pluscar). Fuerteventura is a long thin island, the best beaches are in the south. There are lots of hiking trails there too.

Lanzarote has fewer nice beaches, and is rather more touristy.

The beaches in Tenerife are awful! Black volcanic sand.

Gran Canaria is extremely busy and is perhaps best avoided.

I wouldn't say that any of the islands could be regarded as having particularly good food. There are some decent restaurants though, and TripAdvisor is the place to look.

Our favourite beaches are about 10 minutes' drive south of Costa Calma in Fuerteventura. Our all-time favourite is Sotavento (see pic) and just a bit further south is Mal Nombre. Sotavento is beautiful but there are no facilities. Mal Nombre has a beach restaurant, toilets, rental sunbeds, etc.

We're naturists, and most of the beaches in Fuerteventura are naturist, so you can wander for miles along the water's edge. If you don't want an all-over suntan, don't worry, naturists and textiles happily inter-mingle on the beaches.

One of the hotels we quite like in Fuerteventura is VIK Suite Hotel Risco del Gato. It's very quiet, has large individual suites, each with a jacuzzi and a totally private outdoor courtyard with sunbeds.

Feel free to ask me any specific questions.

Thank you so much I will check out the hotel . We had been looking for vrbo place but a friend also told us to check out hotels. I will look into the one you mentioned. We have to figure out how to get there. Plan to go to Madrdid from Casablanca and fly from there. Is there an airport on Fuerteventura and can you just arrange the car rental from the airport or is it best to taxi to hotel and do car rental from there.

Yes, if you fly to Madrid you can get a direct flight to Fuerteventura. The easiest car rental would be to rent from the airport - as I posted earlier, car rental is cheap. Pluscar are very convenient, you just leave the terminal, go into the car park, and they are waiting for you with your car in a pre-assigned parking place. No excess deposits, no silly insurance scams, no fuel scams, just pay the rental and go on your way. The roads are fairly quiet, and well sign-posted. If you get lost, Google Maps is your friend!

I'm afraid my profile pic is just a random photo library pic. I can't remember where it is.

We've been to Greece many times; the beaches aren't especially brilliant, often pebbly. One of the most stunning Greek beaches is Voidokilia, near Pylos. Check out this pic - https://www.flickr.com/photos/costanavarino/6174635937
