DAILY HERALD ARTICLEIs it just me or does this perhaps seem a little odd to have these electronic devices outside in the sun, heat and rain?

I think they are located under the roof that juts out over the sidewalk.
But maybe they will move them inside once they have the inside all done.

Yes, it does appear that way but there is still the exposure to the heat if nothing else. Heat + electronics is not a good combination. I am sure they will eventually be moved inside, IF they survive being outside.

Right, heat + HUMIDITY plus electronics is not a good combination. I predict those particular machines won't lost too long outside.

They do have covers. I would think, that maintenance would zip them up once the rain starts. Or am I asking to much???LOL!!! BTW, IMHO. I think these are a great idea!!! Anything to improve the dreaded standing in the ever NOT moving lines, I'm all for it!!! Is it me? That people ask the stupidest questions of the ticket counter people or what!!!

The covers will only intensify the heat. Not saying they are not a good idea but the outside elements are not good for electronics.

Really depends on the manufacturer of the kiosks... I worked for years in the retail store div. of a certain big, three letter company. ALL of our POS terminals and kiosks were designed to be placed in extreme conditions - literally weeks running at -50 and at 200 degrees without airflow. They went through extensive elemental torture testing - temp., sun, dust storms, even lightning. We knew registers would sit outside (Think Walmart, Lowes or Home Depot), ...and if any of you think that POS terminals sitting in a checkout lane, inside (under a counter) EVER get cleaned you are dreaming. Those are some of the hotest and most restrictive environments - just nasty. As for water... well, for trade shows we used to demo our kiosks sitting IN a running waterfall. So, good kiosk hardware is designed for those conditions. So, assuming they are using good hardware, then frankly I would be more concerned about the fancy enclosures holding the hardware than the hardware. Particle bd, laminate and such are far more likely to fail outside like that than good kiosk hardware is.

PnPin--interesting. Thanks for the note. kim--now THAT'S funny! Someone needs to confirm or deny that, with pictures! Maybe they weren't operational yet, and they hadn't yet spray-painted the lettering off! IF they were recycled machines, I doubt they would qualify as good hardware..
