Headed to Puerto Rico on Friday, staying in Old San Juan and wondering if the trip to the bio bay near Fajardo is worth. Online reviews have been mixed.

The Bio Bay NOT to miss is on Vieques, Puerto Mosquito. It is magical, especially when there is a new moon or very little moonlight. I've never been to the one near Fajardo, so can't help you but if you can get to Vieques---GO

I would not recommend the one in Fajardo at this time. It has been dark for a little bit. May be due to the water treatment plant run off.
The one here is amazing. It hasn't been near as bright due to the lower water temps. They are active at about 82 degrees and higher I think. I can check and let you know.

To this day and including all the wonderful things we've enjoyed throughout the Caribbean, nothing has been as spectacular as the bioluminescent bay on Vieques. Can't speak for the one near Fajardo but if you're on or near Vieques, see it if you can! You definitely won't be disappointed!!

We visited the bio bay at Fajardo last week. I was, sadly, underwhelmed by the experience. I can't say I wished we wouldn't have done it but I also can't say I would recommend it to a friend.

We were staying at the Wyndam and it was a 30+ minute trip each way. I would think it would be a hour from San Juan.

If you go, I would recommend an early trip. We were booked for the 9pm trip that didn't leave until 10:15pm, it made for a very long trip.

Haven't fact-checked this yet, but just heard that they no longer let you swim in the BioBay in Vieques. Anyone know for sure?
And yes, it was an incredible experience a couple years ago when we did it.

I have it on good authority that this might depend on what outfit you go with...

They are not letting anyone swim anymore. Period.
It's been going thru a not so good transition and the tour operators are really scaling back the tours. One has stopped all together for the next 6 months.

It's sad, but it's bouncing back. I don't have all the details as to why and when... but I know some of it in a small way is related to all the body oils, bug sprays, etc that get in the water when people swim.

Actually there was construction going on in Fajardo and the run off entered the bay and ruined it but it's coming back slowly.
I heard from many people that they were still taking tourist there and they were disappointed and no refunds were given.
