I see people thinking this is a done deal, but this appeared on the front page of the Daily News Monday. There are public hearings still scheduled.

Talk about changing a harbor and an island!
The infra-structure to support this is not there... water, fuel, power, sanitation, lodging, staff, etc!
A helipad would be nice too.

The water can be made, fuel is easy, actually it can be done but it will destroy the laid back feeling of what made Coral Bay enjoyable.

That's my post above I forgot to login.
I feel instead of a marina just put in a fuel/water dock and some mooring balls.

There are actually two marina projects in the works. The land deal for the church property went through a few months ago and then the announcement that Guy Benjamin school was being closed (it sits on adjacent property), probably the perfect site to locate a new Customs office - pure speculation. It should also be noted that the Summer's End group got a million dollar government grant to "improve the boating market on St. John". I'd say its a done deal.

The customs office will be key. Being able to clear in without messing around with Cruz Bay or CA would be huge for any yachts coming in from the BVI's and points east. If you haven't spent a quiet night at Salt Pond, now's the time to do it.

How is it not a conflict of interest for the port authority chairman to be heading up this development effort?

A customs office would be the ticket especially if they could work an arrangement with the BVI which would allow BVI charterers the leeway to check in and out of C&I in Coral Bay without having to check back into the BVI C&I.
This would benefit both countries. But of course the federal governments on both sides don't have a clue or the IQ for business. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

Combine the offices and have C&I for both countries located at STT and Beef and maybe one additional for incoming vessels. They could close the rest of the offices and allow unlimited travel within the territory, imagine the impact on tourism. Never happen w the banana republic political system.

Wow, a marina??? Geeze, all I would like is a decent dinghy dock that fit everyone without walking over 4 or 5 other dinghies to get ashore!
