My 9 year old son and I are arriving in GC in October for our annual Manly Men's Offshore Snorkel week. We spend a lot of time in the water, can go fairly far out (1km) as a pair and the Caymans seem like a good choice.

We are staying at Sunshine.. Sunset on 7 mile and I think we'll definitely need a car some or all of the time we are there (want to hit the east/north snorkel spots, we are there to snorkel/beach/eat).

Any good rental suggestions? I'm not opposed to renting for the entire week (and that might be the best option if a car is $25/day, I don't really care if it sits idle 23.5 hours/day).

But, I don't know if the snorkel spots on the west end (7 mile) are bus accessible, is parking easy (if it is impossible that is a huge factor) etc.

Basically we want to relatively easily be able to get around this island without relying on bogus bus schedules or expensive/not easy to find taxi's.

Any insight is greatly appreciated... rental agencies... off the beaten path snorkel sites (he did lemontree in St. John's at 6, open water, 3 kn current, he is pretty hardy and very into it... does open water boat snorkels... 1 mile offshore, 5 kn currents are the edge of his limit).

Thanks,
mattie

There are lots of car rental agents close to the airport property, all within walking distance. We rented from Thrifty there and they seemed to have the best price. It is less expensive to rent for the week and great to have a car to get around the island when you want to go somewhere.

Did you mean to say Sunshine Suites....on 7 mile....if you did there is good snorkeling at Cemetery Reef.....right going out of Sunshine Suites....about a 2 or 3 mile drive....there is a bus that goes past both.....7-mile is ok for snorkeling as well.....PLEASE make sure you look both ways as the driving is on the other side of what you are used to, especially with your son....I have rented from Andy's Car rental.....never had a problem....
There is a fellow on this forum Testedo that is a Cayman expert, hope he might respond....
When you get to GC there are lots of maps with the best sites.....have fun...kate <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/canada.gif" alt="" />

Yes, Sunshine Suites.

Sounds like a weekly rental is probably the best bet.

Thanks for the heads up on driving, I rented a car in St. Marteen a few years back and didn't have a problem with left side driving (until I got home!)

Sorry, in SXM, they drive on the 'right' side of the road, so if you were driving on the left, people may have been looking at you funny.. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Smile.gif" alt="" />

Must have been Thailand.. I can't think of where else I've rented a car recently... Hong Kong? (horrible place to drive).
