Hello all, going to be chartering next spring with the family (8 people, 4 kids 7-11 yo), 10 years after our last charter where this forum was so helpful.

We're looking at two sailing cats, both about the same cost. One is a 2019 Lagoon 450 and one is a 2024 Nautitech Open 44.

What I can't figure out is why the much newer boat is the same price - is there something I'm missing? The Nautitech has a dual helm versus the Lagoon's flybridge, and the Nautitech looks a little speedier to the Lagoon's more spacious layout.

How important is the age of a boat? Newer Lagoon 450s rent for much more so I'm assuming there's something less desireable about the Nautitech.

The Nautitech is kind of a screwy layout and has far less space overall. Some however really like the concept. Biggest downside is two heads verses four. You might also talk to Brent at Captains Compass. He has extremely good pricing on two Leopard 45’s. Same boat as the Moorings 4500 and comparable to the Lagoon with a better aft cockpit setup.

We’ve sailed several lagoon 450s and recently chartered a Nautitech Open 44 and really liked it. Sailed better than a lagoon and the layout worked for us. That said we only had six on board and mostly older teens. I think it might be a bit cramped for eight - especially with four younger ones. The extra heads and the fly bridge on the Lagoon would both be nice to have with that crew as well as the overall roominess of the boat. For sailing and performance the open 44 all day long. For roominess and comfort at anchor I’d go with the lagoon.

As George mentioned, Brent with CC has some great deals. We have chartered with him numerous times. We, most recently, did 8 on Stargazer last Christmas/NYE, one of his 45s; which also happens to be owned by another TTOL'er. We had 3 kids under 12, a 22yr old, 2 45yr olds and a 68 yr old. Awesome trip. We cant wait to check out his new 40 on our next trip. Id rather put the extra cash into flying direct to EIS or a water taxi to make life easier.

Yes. I own Stargazer and Brent does a wonderful job chartering. He keeps all his boats in great shape and keeps us happy to share our wonderful Leopard 45. Brent’s goal is to offer a good mix of boats for various needs.

How important is the age of the boat? The somewhat older 47' we rented had a smell immediately noticeable when you entered the cabin. And anything mild steel (hose clamps to the bilge pumps just as an example) were visibly rusty. Newer is better IMO.

I always opt for the newer boats, including many different Lagoons. Never sailed a Nautitech so no opinion on that. Newer boats include improvements like water makers and more reliable gear.

A well maintained older boat would be significantly better than a poorly maintained newer boat.

Pick a fleet with excellent maintenance.

TMM for example does a great job with maintaining all of their boats regardless of age.
