Been a while. Setting up a trip for Dec '2024 with wife and sons. We've narrowed it down to a '23 Lagoon 40 (Star of the Seas 2) and a '20 FP Lucia 40 (Wish You Were Here). Challenge: My boys are 6'4" (18) and 6'7" (22). Question: Which of these two boats has better headroom and berth length. Other than going bigger (unless you want to chip in), any other boats better?

We owned a Lagoon 40 in the TMM fleet. Things are a bit tight on 40’s and we upgraded her to a Lagoon 42 (2023). Much more room overall. That 2’ makes a difference. That said most berths in boats this size are very comparable. Sure you don’t want a 42? An owners version would be good for a family of 4-6 and at a better price point typically than a 4 cabin. (provided you are captaining yourself).

I'm assuming most will have similar headroom in cockpit and saloon, but even an inch or two difference is big when you're 6'7". I appreciate any/all feedback. BTW, this will be my 5th (maybe 6th) charter but first with these two full-grown humans. I'm the shortie at 6'2". (We want the four cabins, one of us snores professionally.)

LOL - I sympathize! Look at some of the TMM boats - many owners do direct bookings and you may save some $$. We prefer Lagoons hands down. Spilt helms are not my favorite.

Interesting, we may be able to make a 3 cabin work. What is the best path to booking direct with an owner? Moondance yours?

I will send you a PM so we don’t violate Carol’s forum rules.

Did she always have that big hole in the side?

JK, I'll do a flyby on the paddleboard a little later and give you a report cool

I’m 6’6” tall, and recently chartered a ‘20 FP Lucia, Shelly Kay out of BVIYC. I can’t speak for the berths in the lagoon exactly, but I can for the Lucia. I’ve day sailed a lagoon 40 but never really went below. I like Cats as I seem to end up with better headroom than Mono’s.
On The FP I had no troubles in any space with headroom, or length in the “owners suite” aft berth. Same on the cockpit/salon spaces in the lagoon. The forward saloon windows are vertical in the lagoons, carrying the ample headroom farther forward than the “faster” raked forward windows of the Fontaine pajot. I like the FP’s lines better, but for livability the lagoon undoubtedly has a bit more volume. But how often do you stand that far forward? A lot of that space is over couches/nav stations…
I’d imagine either would be just fine for your boys, and they can be in charge of prepping and stowing the main, as sometimes the zips on the top of the sail bag are hard to reach for normal sized people.

There’s nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.

That's great info, thank you. They are both great, capable mates; they'll own the tasks on deck and above.
