I have a brother in law flying in to STT on the 10:15 pm flight from Miami. I don't mind sailing to St Thomas to pick him up. Any good ideas about where I could anchor or dock to do a late night pick up? I have a good cab driver (Stanley) who will meet him and deliver. The bay to the left of the runway as you fly in has a nice beach right next to a road I could dinghy in for a pick up or suggestions for a marina to dock a 44 foot cat?

Ja, Crown Bay has great amenities and you could make a night of it at Tickles or French Town. Great brunch at Tickles too. Lindbergh Bay would be doable, but there's no public dinghy dock. Brewers Bay has a tough reputation.

Get a mooring at Frenchtown marina.

Frenchtown Marina? where would that be, the CYOA dock?

How about anchoring in Charlotte Amalie then have the taxi take him to the water front dock in front of you or you can dinghy and meet at any of the marinas in town.

I just did two pickup and drop off's in St Thomas. We used both Crown Bay Marina and by anchorage in Charlotte Amalie. For picking up one person, anchoring in Charlotte Amalie would be easy enough. We had the taxi meet the dinghy at the far East end of the waterfront by the t-shirt plaza. It is flat calm and easy enough to pick up passengers. The holding is good for anchoring in the harbour as well.....

Picking up an available mooring in Frenchtown from CYOA is very convenient. At that time of night there are still food and drink options right there as well.
Call CYOA ahead of time to make arrangements for sure.

I am very confident they do. Also restaurants in French town are steps away. No need for a cab.

Thanks for all the good ideas. Any security concerns about anchoring off the Warf in Charlotte Amalie? I know I would lock the dinghy but will be sleeping with open hatches. If not, then that looks like a fun place to sit on the boat at night and watch all the activity on water and on shore.

I don't think you will see any activity.

Only on an "if available" basis - it is a plan ahead, short term option - but convenient in many cases.

The CYOA moorings are different than the ones you see in the VINP and BVI. They have two painters that you can hook over your bow cleats. No need for mooring lines. But, you do get some ferries popping through the cut nearby and seaplanes coming and going - part of the show. Crown Bay is more convenient for provisions, fuel and water. CYOA/French Town Marina wins for access to restaurants and bars. We usually catch up with LocalSailor there. Both are choices we would be happy with.
