do you need to rent a car ahead of your trip or you can do it when you there ?

Depends on the time of year. High season, reservations are almost a must. Off season, you could probably take your chances but I would suggest contacting a sponsor and getting some quotes. Better to be safe than sorry.

I need a car only for 2 days and im going to stay at sonesta maho beach next week

Ok. I would still suggest contacting a sponsor or you could also probably rent via the Sonesta Maho. I would think they have an agency they work with.

I believe the Sonesta Maho has a Hertz desk in the lobby, not always manned, so suggest you ask at check in when there will be someone there. The cars are kept in the hotel parking garage, so easy to return at the end of your rental

Since Hertz is represented at your resort here is the web site for Hertz in SXM. If you book online they give you a 10% discount. All they need to have are your dates needed and where you want to pick up the care. Been using them for over 15 years without a glitch. Hope this helps. http://hertz.sxmrentacar.com/
