Just got to Orient beach and the seaweed is pretty bad. How is it at Club O?

Yep. Just got back from Alaska king salmon fishing for a week. Go again in three weeks for silvers. Bird hunting Sept-January and back to SXM in May for four weeks. Love retirement.

Now that we know scuba man's retirement itinerary, can anyone else give me an update on the seaweed a club o?I have two little kids that's a long walk.

Club O has in general done a better job of cleaning up seaweed than the rest of Orient. However, sorry, get in the car and drive two minutes to find out yourself????

Club O's webcam is back on line. Early in the morning you can see how much seaweed has washed up in front of the Perch Bar. The situation doesn't appear too bad on that end of the beach.

You know it's seaweed right? It's natural and belongs there.
We have seaweed here now also.

I'm not on the island now but when we were there in March the seaweed was pretty bad on the sand and in the water along Orient. For some reason the closer to Club O we got there was much less seaweed in the water. Though I will say a lot of the places were raking it up around 9 or 10 in the morning. Take a chance. Enjoy!

I know you already know this having lived there as long as you did, but there's seaweed, and then there's SEAWEED.

When we were on SXM mid April to early May there was seaweed around the island like I've never before seen in all the 42+ years we've been going there. Coming in to land, from the plane it looked like the water as far as you could see was coated with an oil slick or something equally icky but the closer we came, we realized it wasn't oil but (so we were advised after a few days of being there and asking about it) the (in)famous Sargasso seaweed we'd already been made aware of .

It wasn't always on the beaches themselves or even close in to them, and the various impacted beaches seemed to change from day to day, probably driven by the winds and the tides.

We were at Mullet a few times and the beach didn't have a blade of seaweed to be seen and one other day we went it was disgusting. We could actually see it laying in the water at Mullet Beach from our balcony at the Towers.

We went to Marys Boon twice as Boonies for the day and it was okay - no problem getting in and out of the water and it really didn't have much impact on swimming - yet by the time we'd relocated at the end of our trip to stay on the beach at BSV, the seaweed was really bad. They raked and bagged it every morning so the beach was relatively clean for the most part, but even going in and out of the water was not inviting for several of the days we were there.

The day we took our around the island boat tour, the seaweed was very heavy in some areas and almost non-existent in others. I use to fly the U.S.A.F. Auditor General along with other VIPs in the late 60s and early 70s and he always managed to schedule his inspections of Alaska bases during the king salmon run.

The seaweed is heaver than usual due to the winds being so strong. We were there for two weeks and just left today The winds died down quite bit today. There is usually less seaweed down towards the water sports area.
