This coming beach season will mark the fourth year without a naturist beach on Long Island. Here's a thought. Since the Lighthouse is now a major tourist attraction and learning area for children, let's have all the protesting naturists move out of the Lot 5 area and move west down to Lot 1 or 2 to enjoy the beach. This way no one gets offended and the issue is solved. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/circle.gif" alt="" /> Based on reports, the habitats and dunes have corrected themselves and are now thriving. This could and should also apply to the west end of Smith's Point. BTW, any word from The Naturist Society? Anyone?

We have found the best alternative on Long Island (besides our boat and backyard)is now Cherry Grove. Take the ferry out of Sayville and make a day of it. Nude sunbathing is permitted throughout the beach. We frequent the west end of the beach and have often run into other "displaced" nude couples.

Joe,

Lots 1&2 are in Robert Moses STATE Park and the state only allows topless. Lot 5 is also Robert Moses but you had to walk the half mile into the Fire Island National Seashore to reach Lighthouse, a federal beach.
NAC is still working with the US Dept of the Interior on legal issues and it is a time consuming and costly endeavor.
Gunnison Beach in NJ or Cherry Grove are your only legal beach options.

Isn't Cherry Grove a gay only beach?

Do you mean that they won't allow anyone else on the beach?

I haven't been there in over 40 years but Cherry Grove and the Pines were traditionally gay oriented. Having said that there has been a trend over the last several years where straight/gay nude beach demarcation lines have faded a bit. Now we have people from both persuasions sitting wherever they like in such places as Gunnisons in NJ and in SXM. Everyone enjoying a good beach day together. Harmony day's rein supreme at these nude beaches and I suspect they do at Cherry Grove as well.

We have been to Cherry Grove for the past 3 years for 1 weekend in August time frame. It is predominately gay, however there are several folks that go nude on the beach. On the beach most wear suits and those that choose to go nude are among those wearing suits. There is no nude section per se. Instead its a mix of nudes in with the general beach population. There are police and they do drive up and down the beach but they seem to leave people who are nude alone. Walking up and down the beach small groups of nudes are more frequent where there is less people. Pretty laid back atmosphere. If you want to go nude, you can, but I guess its at your own risk as it technically not permitted...I guess. Everytime we have been there, there is always nudes on the beach...just not in big numbers and it certainly does not feel like a nude beach.
