Hi--my husband and I (age 60) are going to CGB--first time--we've been in St John twice before-and are planning to stay 3 days in May. I'm just wondering what recommendations you may have for lodging when we are there--the Cottages are beautiful but are off the beach, but we are also really interested in being close to the beach--our priorities are not for fancy, just clean and comfortable rooms! From my research it looks like the other two options are Myetts and the ELM--both look nice but am wondering about the perspective of those of you more experienced in the area--also if there is some place I don't know about! Thank you so much--

Myettes is square in the middle of everything and very nice rooms. The Elm is almost next door and a bit more down scale but great location and people. The Cottages are not far off the beach and allow you to get away from the social whirl if you need a break. Especially on a two cruise ship day and late nights when a DJ is working Quito's. Another alternative might be Indigo House. Right on the beach but a bit removed from the noise. (Except for cruise ship days when it is best to be as far from the beach at CGB as possible.)

Also check out Columbus Sunset Appartments right next door to the Cottages.

For right on the beach you have three options..Rhymer's which is very clean but very basic ( we stayed there for years before buying CRC), next The Elm which is a little more upmarket right next door..nicest spot is the new suite above the restaurant..and then Myett's..any of the three would suit me..if $$ is a consideration I'd happily opt for Rhymer's again ( best breakfast on the beach IMHO..and great Bloody Marys..lovely staff..not saying that all three dont have great folks)

Nothing in CGB is very far off the beach. It would not hurt my feelings or sensibilities in the least to have to wear my flip-flops to cross the narrow strip of roadway that exists at CGB to access the beach, I probably walk just as far from my back door to my car at home, and half of the year that is through snow.

Being of generally the same age, I'd probably prefer to have some buffering distance from late evening entertainment, even if it may be quite GOOD entertainment. If I'm done by 9 or 10 PM, I'm done. Old farts still have fun, sometimes we just don't make every day a marathon.

One thing that happens in CGB, as well as other places in the islands, is that the roosters DO wake you up early regardless of what time you went to bed.

Everything in CGB is close enough to the beach to have sand between your toes.

These are all really helpful replies--thank you all so much--Breeze, in response to your comment re buffering distance, does the music play until 2 am? We will be there in early May--a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night if that helps the answer any! Thanks again everyone--they all sound like good options for us!

As far as advertised music evenings, Sunday Monday and Tuesday are pretty safe. You just don't know when someone is going to get married at CGB and have the party go on 'til the last six people fall down.

CGB is a bowl on its side, a very steep hillside behind the waterfront. Sound projects out over the water and echoes within the bowl.

On a perfectly peaceful calm and quiet evening, I'd love to be close to the water and hear the lapping of the waves, and let that be the sound lulling me to sleep. If that is what I wanted pretty much guaranteed for 3 nights, I'd be more looking at Mal's availability in Apple Bay. That would most likely mean a rental car and driving.

Pick one. Any one. It is an adventure, right ?

I love Myett's for the staff and the location. Last couple of times we've stayed at Sandman's Grand K Suites tho - it's right next to Bobby's and just behind Myett's. You are still considered a Myett's guest there, so you can still use their chairs, towels etc. And you get a beautiful condo for about the same price as a hotel room. Saves $$ if you do breakfast and lunch on your own and just go out for dinner.

It's not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Columbus Apartments are in a quieter part of CGB. Set back from the road, they are clean, well-maintained and comfortable. The store/bar is right next door, and the beach is easily accessible by a short sandy walkway just across the street. Rose and Sky will make you very welcome.

Similar votes for Rhymer's, closer to the beach, but more nighttime noise. Nice deck for morning coffee.

Both very reasonably priced. Myett's nice but more $$.

You choose..!

Although it's not on your list, but I recommend the Mongoose Apartments. They are actually on a path behind the Columbus apt.. We are going to stay there for our tenth visit next month and we have always been happy.

We really like Mongoose Apartments. Easy walk to the action but far enough away that it is quiet when needed.

I have stayed at the Cottages the past three years twice a year for about 16 days each stay and love them. Depending on your budget ALL the venues on Cane are nice and perfectly suited to a beautiful stay.

Sorry I'm so late to jump on this thread. We are a 60-70ish couple and have stayed in CGB in various places once or twice a year over the years, as recently as 2014. I just wanted to mention CGB Cottages, as well as Myett's and Mongoose Apts. Loved them all. We had no problem with noise at Myett's. CGB Cottages are lovely and we liked feeling like we were in a neighborhood, watching locals walking by to school, work, etc, as we sat on the open air patio or in the open air dining room. Easy walk from there to the beach, beach chairs provided, and short walk down to the hubbub of the bars and restaurants. They are right next door to Columbus Apts. and Columbus Bar which has a mini-mart with grocery and alcohol items. Mongoose Apartments are equally lovely with WONDERFUL on-site owners and you feel like you're in a jungle. I'd be happy to share pics with you if you haven't booked yet and need more info.

You might want to consider the Agape Cottages. They are directly across from Myetts so you have easy beach access but are set up on the hillside so you have great views of the bay and Jost Van Dyke and are away from any evening entertainment noise.

All bedrooms are air conditioned so you can drown out the roosters if you want to.

Regards,
Jason
