This just popped up in my inbox. I especially like the "NO SPRAY SUNTAN" rule. oily greasy stuff on a sailboat is nothing short of dangerous. Please, leave that stuff at home. And while your at it, leave the nail polish remover home as well.

+ some great pictures of the RC44 races in North Sound.

people have to be told to clean up after themselves if they spill something??? that's pretty sad! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

I like the "no spray sunscreen" rule, but from a practical perspective there are many places you can use it that it doesn't fall on the deck. So I've relaxed that rule as long as people are careful and don't spray it on the deck.

IMO spray sunscreen is entirely worthless anyway.

I always get a laugh when I see people applying it in the wind and you can see that 95% is just blowing away.

It also doesn't protect worth a damn.

Nail polish remover comes in handy in case you need some acetone. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

Where on the boat? Even at the furthest away point, I see the residue. Some misunderstand me when I say "NO" and go to the fold down transom on "LUCI". It even gets on that. since you are headed into the wind, the drag/low pressure zone, just coats the deck with the stuff.
Or maybe you could do it on the back of the catamaran and make the gelcoat steps nice and greasy.

+the other 50% goes to the wind. The only time it doesn't get on the boat is when you use it on the beach.

Just "stuff you learn"

All noted but cant count how many times a bottle of lotion fell or squeeze or got stepped on and the resultant mess was much worse than the residue from the spray. Like most rules in life, do something responsibly to avoid unintended consequences <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

I invited a friend to join us on a fishing trip. He showed up with hoagies (Italian subs) for everyone and a large styrofoam cup of olive oil. I didn't see the olive oil until we opened our sandwiches for lunch and when I asked what was in the styrofoam cup, it proceeded to slip out of his hand and break open on the cockpit deck. I don't have to go into details about how slippery the deck was for the remainder of the trip. It wasn't! funnily at the time, but we've had a lot of laughs since than talking about it.

I do a lot of testing of different common chemicals and their effect on marine products. You would be amazed at what spray sun screen does. Even the stuff for kids. It is by far the worst of the products I have tested that are commonly used in the marine environment such as all types of fuel etc. and to think many people spray that stuff on our kids. Way worse than other types of sunscreen. Watch out it may eat up you cushions and damage many other things.

Rule #1 for is no whiners.

No spray on sunscreen or DEET in any form. Both melt or discolor upholstery. We keep picaridin bug and oil of lemon eucalyptus bug spray on board.

Smokers can only smoke on the transom, and only at anchor.

20 wet pumps after #2 clears the bowl. Only those things you eat first go in the head.

Ask if you can help.

Rule #1 takes care of all other issues.

Cheers, RickG
