Sangria – Salamanca Style
In a large container or pot mix the following
2 bottles of Spanish Red Wine – Tempranillo or Garnacha are usually my choice, but definitely not expensive wine 1 cup of Rum - I prefer dark but not flavored 1/2 cup of Brandy… why Spanish of course 1 ˝ cup of Apple Juice 1 cup of Orange Juice, (Better Squeezed fresh than out the bottle) 1 large squeezed lemon 3 tablespoons of sugar
Slice up 2 Oranges, 1 apple, 1 lemon, (fruit should be fairly thin) and place them in the Sangria. • You can add a few slices of lime, but I would not add lime until you are ready to serve
Stir well blending the fruit into the liquid. Put the top on pot and place in refrigerator
Let it sit for 48 hours….Ok … 24 hours… or however long you can wait, but the secret to Sangria is patience! It needs time for the fruit and wine to become one.
Stir a couple times mixing up the fruit while it is resting in the refrigerator.
Serve over ice,
Add a little Club Soda on the top if you like bubbles. That is your call - I like it better with no bubbles.
I learned this recipe from a bartender in Salamanca in 1972 and it has never failed me.
“Every time I open a bottle of wine, it is an amazing trip somewhere!” José Andrés
