Bought the 73 Thing in 1986 for $1,900. Put the right bits back on it. It was my daily driver around LA as I didnt want to use my 56 Porsche or 56 Cadillac at the time to the rigours of that. The car went through the LA Riots, fires, mudslides the whole OJ trial and floods...went down through Baja , Mexico and up to Sonoma. We used it as a camera car with the top off, windshield down and camera mounted in the back. Two engine rebuilds, one new gearbox ( second needed soon), dozens of brake parts..shipped it to Tortola in 2006 where it has been beaten to death by the roads, potholes and hills and survived getting swamped and blown apart by Hurricane Irma. We have battled the rust with "creative" welding and bodywork and now, hopefully, it awaits our return under its cover at CRC. BTW..a VW Thing just sold in auction for $54,000..think I've got my $$'s worth?? The cover is indeed intact and looking very secure!
