Carol, I would suggest staying in Rodney Bay especially if he is traveling alone; there are lots of bars and restaurants along the road similar to Simpson Bay (without the traffic). BGBR is a nice place, but I usually stay at the Bay Garden Inn or Bay Garden Hotel (I prefer the inn, smaller and quieter). They have a free shuttle (7am-10pm) to BGBR or it's just a 15 minute walk and you can use all of the facilities including beach chairs and umbrellas. I would also recommend a day trip to the Soufriere area to see the Pitons, waterfalls, hot springs and botanical gardens.
