We returned last week from thre days on St. John and a week on Tottolla at fort Recovery. I'll save the St. John section for that board. We found many of the suggestions on this board to be very helpful. Here goes:
Fort Recovery: The condo had a great view, the staff was very efficient and friendly and we enjoyed our stay there but were surprised by the term luxury resort that is applied to Fort Recovery. Our condo was in need of a rehab- cracked tiles, missing glass from light fixtures, a slider that my wife could barely open and a poorly equipped kitchen- for example four beer mugs were the extent of the glasses- the condo had the feel and look of grandmas cottage- we certainly aren't used to luxury- we have camped and stayed in moderate condos and cottages on Tortolla and St. John. By no stretch was this a luxury resort. It was nice to have breakfast everyday and the breads were delicious but it was exactly the same every day- a little variety would have helped. We did notice that a couple of the other condos looked more updated so maybe we were in the oldest ones. The dinner that was seved in on out patio was excellent.
Beaches- Smugglers Cove was beautiful but I was dissappointed by the snorkeling- I wondered if the reef was dying because there was so much dead coral washed up on the end of the beach.
Cane Garden Bay- Just as beautiful as it was in 1989 but with more restaurants or bigger ones but that have managed to hide them very nicely. They bring the cruises in there now but we were there on an of day- it appears that almost everything has been rebuilt or repaired since 1989- it has everything and we decided we might stay there again.
Marina Cay- A long drive to the ferry from Ft. recovery but worth it- the beach is georgeous- since I had read Our Virgin Isle I was excited to see the house that the Whites built- I wished that Pussers had done more about telling their story in the house. The restaurant serve a great lunch- what a spot to eat- don't miss it.
Long Bay ( Beef Island) a georgeous beach with no one there most of the time but the noise from the airplanes taking off is a little disturbing.
White Bay- Jost Van Dyke- Spectacular- I had heard for years that this was a beautiful beach but I couldn't believe how beautiful- the snorkeling was the best I have seen in 20 years of snorkeling St. John, Tortolla and the Baths- My wife and I want to stay at Sandcastle resort there although she thinkls that it might be to quiet for a full week. We took the When- it left 45 minutes late and the owner told us the 5:00 P. M. boat wouldn't be running so we took the Paradise Express back at 4:30 and they took the round trip ticket from the When. I found this nice gesture to be typical of the people on Tottolla.
The Indians and Norman Island- not very good snorkeling at either place. The caves had more people than fish- many were children who didn't want to be snorkeling-al least this was a free trip with FT. Recovery's package. Lunch at the Willie Thornton pirate ship was fun.
Lambert Beach Resort- Spectatacular setting- huge waves- lots of warning about underto and rip tides so I didn't go in until other people showed up- if you like waves don't miss this place- the sand isn't that nice but you can use the resort's beach furniture. The hill from Long Look to the resort is the only place where my tires were spinning in first gear on Tortolla- the road to the resort is concrete- better traction.
We skipped Brewers Bay this time because we remembered the white knuckle ride down there in 1989 but heard from friends that it was as pristine as ever.
Restaurants: Jolly Roger- excellent food, great service fun place.
Capricio di Mare-Nice Italian appetizer and pizza
Pussers Roadtown- Great crabcake sandwich
C and F's- Best restaurant of the trip- just as good as everyone on this board said it would be
Frenchmen's Cay- Excellent meal and service- great setting- looks fancy but the price was about the same as C & Fs in Roadtown
BVI chop HOuse for lunch- great location and you can use the pool.
Elm Beach Bar (lunch) acceptable hot dog
Soggy Dollar Bar- great salads and fantastic conch fritters (JOst Van dyke)
Lambert's- poor- a little expensive- the club sandwich came on a hamburg roll-next time we'll bring our lunch
We ate in an expensive little restaurant in Roadtown by mistake- we thought it was Capricio di Mare- it is a couple of doors up the food was decent but overpriced. Don't ask how we did this- we were on vacation.
Ft. Burt's terrace- went for a drink and the view- worth it but don't drive up the very steep driveway- there is nowhere to park at the top- scary reentry onto waterfront drive in Roadtown- a friendly Tottollan told us where we could park.
Our only decision now is whether to return to Tortolla or St. John or try Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke. Thanks again to everyone for the many suggestions.
