We had that exact experience a few years back, and for two years in a row having notified Citibank both years of our travels and having our cards hacked both times. It seemed too coincidental to me the second time it happened. Just sayin'.......
I no longer tell our cc companies specifics of our travels but there is a standing notification in our account history that we do travel to certain places, generally twice a year.
