I don't see any reason to wait - we've been 3 times now with our 18 month old.. first trip was at 6 months..
Our favorite stop with him in the BVI was Scrub Island, but I don't think I'd call that a kid friendly resort.. it certainly had some kid friendly stuff but I think kids would tend to get bored.

Having dragged our daughter now 11 all over the planet with about 2 years of sea time on yachts. Her favorite is the Cancun area. Most of the resorts have great kids clubs where the kids can hang out for the day and parents can enjoy the club. Having been to about 6 resorts there, we just now shop by price as the customer service is always good.
Another plus of Cancun area is quick and easy to get to compared to the Eastern Caribbean.

Another vote for a cruise - Disney is the top choice if you can afford it, but if not, Royal Caribbean, Norweigian, and Carnival are also good picks.
We pick itinerary first, then boat (look for features you want and also age) and then cruiseline. We've probably been on 8 cruises now. Let me know if you have questions. I've been really impressed by how far they've come in 10 years with things like water slides, fun dining options, and interesting itineraries. Our favorite is Western Caribbean - Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Roatan, and Belize - but we've also done Eastern and Southern.
