While I would agree with those two choices, Horny Toad is usually booked during high season.
Turquoise Shell is another option.

There really are very few large resorts in SXM. What part of the island are you looking for? Your note says "St. Martin", which implies French side... What amenities are you looking for? What is your budget?

I'm not sure exactly what they mean by 'mom and pop', but the Dove's Nest is certainly a family owned and run place, and very well could meet the OP's requirements. It's a small place though, and as you said, may already be sold out, as they have a huge return business.
